There's a new critter who's just moved into the compound. Please ignore him if he attempts to bum a cigarette from you. He's trying to quit, and the second-hand smoke aggravates Ginger's asthma something fierce. Please don't enable his bad habits!*

*He knows where the smoking section is. He's just not willing to pass the Kraken to get to it.

I'm late to the Steve/Bucky party and I'm slowly going through the recs on tumblr and FFA. Really enjoyed that selkie AU by legete, and all four fics by Togina. However, I find the rest lackluster? They're decent, but not something I'd want to go back and revisit. Postcardmystery has written one I liked the summary of, but I'm yet to read it (I adored her shakespeare/marlowe so I think I'll be in safe hands)

Those are okay I guess, but I find myself unable to re-read anything written before CA:WS because now all that Bucky characterisation strikes me as completely and hilariously off.

Although I guess it's more of a problem when it's the WInter Soldier being featured in the fics.

Yeah, I think it only affects one or two of my favorites, as I tended not to enjoy the ones where there was a lot of Winter Soldier in them. All the post-WS ones that skip forward to a day where everything is okay are still fine.

The main jossing is in the backstory. All those fics about how they were in an orphanage together are now wrong. But I don't care! I don't! I want all the 'us against the world' orphan backstory fics forever more. I can't get enough.

Still not over the loss of the orphan backstory, tbh. I'm with you there - can't ever get enough of that sort of thing. I just want seventeen-year-olds acting like roughed-up, skinny adults and trying to scrape together enough rent to keep living in their boarding house during the Great Depression, making it on their own with no one but each other. Is that so wrong?

(...apparently it is, so what do I know.)

THIS!!!!!!!! I was SO UPSET in the theatre. I can't get enough of those fics. I can't. It was the only thing I wanted. I wanted an orphanage and 'them against the world'. They are my favorite fics in the fandom. I love them so poor that they can't even function but they have each other.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Oh nonnie. I remember that scene starting and just covering my mouth with my hands, then turning to my friend and hissing Bucky's parents are alive??? at her afterward. I was so scandalized.

I guess that's just the way these things go, though? You can draw assumptions from 616 or from supplemental materials or from the stupid First Vengeance tie-in comic all you want, but what happens on the screen is what goes. I'm still irritated, though. The earliest anyone can pin that scene at is 1936 (with costuming making 1938 seem more likely), meaning Steve's, what, eighteen at the youngest? Bah.

The entire fact that Bucky has a safety net in the form of a family makes me unreasonably sad. I'm not sure why they had to change his orphan backstory from the comics for the MCU, especially just for a throwaway line. I'll just have to keep dreaming of orphanage hijinks and destitute underage teenagers scraping by all on their own.

IDGI. Don't you think it makes it more interesting in terms of their background and characterization that they do have families and other social connections? It gives you a whole 'nother set of elements for relationships, conflicts, and worldbuilding.

Other than the romance of the orphans against the world trope and the idealization of being poor, that scenario doesn't offer nearly as much. It just encourages the lazy writing and claustrophobic codependency that everyone is always railing about on meme.

I would love to see some detailed WS character study. Not just 3 WEEKS LATER BUCKY TURNS UP ON STEVE'S DOORSTEP, NIGHTMARES AND CUDDLING ENSUES

Me too, with the caveat that it's not something ~edgy~ written by quigonejinn. *yawn*

Read a couple of her one-shots, yet to try the longer ones. I'm indifferent really. It seems like she has a habit of writing dark!Bucky, but from Steve's POV, thus failing to delve into Bucky's psyche (not that you can't write a dark character well as an outsider)

I ended up being introduced to quigonejinn via a random fic of hers I thought was really good. Then I skimmed a bunch of her other fics and discovered that they're all essentially the same, and the fic I initially enjoyed so much was no longer any good to me. Her ao3 account is just a mountain of grimdark deviod of any sort of substance.

Plus, a bunch of nonnies on meme linked to her tumblr once and she's so fucking rude and obnoxious. You'd think someone who writes as much non-con as she does would lean away from sjw bullshit, and yet...

I think her earlier Iron Man fic has more originality/variety in them; one of them is an all-time favorite of mine. But her view of Bucky is more grimdark than I prefer; obvs he was not a freaking angel, but she pushes it too far in the other direction for my taste. Same goes for her Natasha.

Not only is the grimdark content of her fics totally same-y, but her writing style is the exact same set of gimmicky affectations for every. Single. Fic.

+1. Where's the fic about all the terrible things which happened to Bucky? Where's the angst? I WANT ALLL THE WINTER SOLDIER ANGST PORN.

/entitled whining.

(I mean, I get why people want fluffy fix-it fics. But I just want to see him suffer. IS THAT SO WRONG?)
