The Dark is Hogwarts - FFA Post #311

Will Stanton should have been at Hogwarts at the exact same time as Lily Evans and James Potter. The Drew siblings were the steadfast foundation of the Ravenclaw social order. No one even noticed Bran Davies albinism. They had fought and won their secret war before the Potters even figured out that Voldemort was returning.

Because sometimes fic alone doesn't cut it.

Meme, what novels/nonfiction books/documentaries/etc. gave you an uncomfortable glance into the minds of guys (preferably guys in power) who think it's okay to creep on women/men they're attracted to?

not unwillingly fascinated with a skeevy person I know's behavior nope not me

It doesn't exactly fit with your request, nonnie, but there's The Other Side of Desire by Daniel Bergner. Each chapter focuses on a different paraphilia, and I remember there being a chapter on pedophilia and being creeped out by a man's justifications for molesting his pre-teen relative.

Portnoy's Complaint, whose value for this purpose is enhanced by the fact that it was written before the author had any cultural reason to think that the behavior and mindset he was showing us was skeevy in any way. It's also a very good novel, if you can accept for the duration that yes, the protagonist/narrator is a vile human being who doesn't realize how vile he is and never will.

Thank you very much! I remember reading it as a young teenager, before I would've caught on to how skeevy it was. I'll have to reread!

A bit cliche, but Lolita was like this for me -- it's obviously got a thick thick patina of (in-universe) ~literary~ wankiness over top of it, but Humbert's behavior toward Dolly (and the adult women in his life) is pretty convincing and immersive as the result of of a particular mindset toward women turned up to 11. (With the disclaimer that what he states about what he's doing and why changes a few times throughout the novel.)

Guyland by Michael Kimmel is a nonfiction book about macho/fratty/dudebro/manchild culture in the US, and focuses pretty much entirely on the negative aspects -- or at least, what the author sees as negative aspects. So rape culture and homophobia are discussed but there's also some pearlclutching about hookup culture and people getting married later in life.

The Collector, a classic tale of a guy winning the lottery, building a sound and escape-proof basement, and holding a girl imprisoned.

Laughable Loves by Milan Kundera. Though the guys tend to be only relatively in power, like compared to the women they're being creepy at; not fictional evil overlord style power.
