Greetings Thor!

Well, I'm one of the agoraphobic shut-ins, and my parents (w/ whom I live) have a houseguest... I'm not really sure how I'm going to get through this week. Mental illness is so dumb. :|

Nonnie, did you mean to post this in the current main post instead of here in off-topic/personal post land?

Let me kick off this thread with a bang. anonymous November 29 2012, 06:39:17 UTC
Sorry to get potentially TMI here, nonnies, but ... I'm pretty sure I just had an orgasm for the first time. Except, being my usual fail self, immediately after it happened I was just left wondering "Did I orgasm?". So... can any ladies out there describe what it's usually like for them? I know it's different for everyone, but still. I feel like I need to pee after, if that helps...

So I'm not the only one that happened to?

Hate to say this, but for me it was pretty much, Wait, what? Damn, just when things were getting really good. Whaddaya mean, that's all? It was a while before I realized that yeah, that was what was supposed to happen. I guess.

Orgasm isn't always the same each time. There are WOW orgasms and meh orgasms and the whole range in between, depending on how aroused you were when you hit the peak ( ... )

Stephen Jay Gould book recs? anonymous November 29 2012, 07:38:53 UTC
Someone asked me to get them something by Stephen Jay Gould for Christmas, but I haven't read any of his books, and I don't think they have either. Have you read anything good by him that you could recommend?

Most of his books are a pretty solid read, but some have more popular interest than others - like most science writers, he can get very pedantic!

If your giftee likes history and/or art or literature, maybe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hedgehog,_the_Fox,_and_the_Magister%27s_Pox

If they like accessible science books, this collection is good: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bully_for_Brontosaurus

And so is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lying_Stones_of_Marrakech

based on my vague memories:

The Panda's Thumb is the classic/most famous biology essay book of his, I believe. It was quite good, enough to get me to read more of his stuff.

I think Hen's Teeth and Horse's Toes is the one with an essay that answers the question of whether zebras are black with white stripes, or white with black stripes, which is a pretty awesome hook.

Ever Since Darwin has some good stuff, but I might not rec it as a present because it's a little too tightly focused (on Darwin-related stuff, naturally) whereas his other books are more wide-ranging in their topics.

If I can easily find my copies tonight, I'll flip through them and come back to give you a more informed recommendation instead of this vague one...

The revised and expanded version of the Mismeasure of Man! It's one of the most formative books I've read and probably one of the more sciency ones of his as well. (Yes, I know about the criticism and controversy, I think it's still one of the most important books on scientific racism there is - also arguably the only one that reached a really broad audience).
