Women, Stop Men from Objectifying You! anonymous July 12 2012, 05:08:17 UTC
Sorry to spoil the mood here, but I just have to rant about this stupid article:

http://thesocietypages.org/socimages/2012/07/10/sexual-objectification-part-3-daily-rituals-to-stop/

I read this and this made so angry I want to scream. The advice just drips with condescension and reeks of someone stuck in an ivory tower. No, I will not engage catcallers with a "witty" question ( doesn't the author have any fucking idea how scary catcalling can be when you're a lone woman walking on the street and a car full of guys yells at you?). I'll dress however I damn well please and if a man wants to objectify me, that's his problem not mine. It's not my fucking responsibility to modify men's behavior by dressing modestly*.

No, I am not going to stop consuming "problematic" media. . Way to put the burden on women again. I'll take a "problematic" and interesting piece of media any day over a "unproblematic" (if such a thing even exists) borefest any day and I refuse to apologize for that.

Putting paper slips on magazines telling women not to read them is not striking a blow for feminism. All it's doing is creating extra work for the stockers and cashiers who don't get paid enough to deal with this stupid shit. (If someone had done that when I was a cashier, I would have fantasized about clobbering the asshole who did that). Guess who has to deal with it if a customer sees the slip and gets angry about it, guess who has to deal with it? It's the workers and possibly the manager who'll have to deal with the angry customer and clean up after you.

Telling women not to compete with other women for men's approval is good in theory, but the way she does it makes me grind my teeth because of the assumption that all other hate and compete with women. Projection much? I know I don't rejoice when my friends fail and I bet a lot of other women feel the same way.

For once, the comments are way better than the article.

*The worst street harassment I ever received was when I was wearing modest clothing. Anyone who thinks that modest clothes act as an impermeable barrier to harassment is buying into a big fat lie

Usually, I can just laugh this kind of "advice" off, but this just made me furious. What do you think, gentlefailers?
