Why hasn't Motherboy, the traditional dance attended by a woman and her son, taken off in fandom? It's not any wackier than a coffeeshop AU.

A young fighting man with a hurt leg saves another young man from being killed in a fighting ring and then buys him (because in this place and time people can own others). The first man's father lost something important to their people, which made everyone think bad thoughts about him. The son thinks if he gets it back, he will make everyone happy again and they will like his father again (although his father is dead now). And he tells the other man that he is not owned anymore but is his friend.

So the two men go looking for the important thing, which it turns out is being held by mean fighting people. The fighting man pretends to be an eye doctor and the man he owns takes away the important thing and hides it, but the mean fighting people learn they have taken the important thing and chase them! And there is a big fight! But the friends tie up the one who chased them longest, and they ride home on the horses that the mean fighting people chased them on, and they bring the important thing back!

And then they get married. Pretty much. At least in our stories. (There is also a girl but the fighting man says she will be happy no matter what, so we all know it ends in a three way.)

They get married and they grow things in the land. But the girl is important.
