My car smells....

…..like Downy!

Not the worst smell in the world, certainly, but actually not the best either.

And why does it smell like Downy, you ask? You did ask, didn’t you?

Not that it matters, because I plan on telling you anyway.

A couple weeks before Christmas, during a trip to Walmart, ostensibly to buy presents for various people, we picked up a very large bottle of Downy that was on special. After carefully stowing our purchases in the trunk we made our way home, at my normal pace and driving procedures, namely as fast as possible with as many quick lane changes as necessary.

After scratching our way up the driveway through the snow we disembarked. Irene sniffed, ‘’Uh oh, do you smell something?’’

I personally smelled nothing. But this isn’t surprising because I am severely scent challenged. Even being blessed with a large bulbous glob I facetiously refer to as a nose, all but the most intense and/or noxious odours escape me. And there, ladies, you have proof positive that size does NOT matter, well at least where sniffing is concerned. So poor is my olfactory abilities that certain people have said, accurately if grammatically incorrect, that I don’t smell good. This is balanced by the fact that Irene has an extremely well developed ability to detect and to identify even the faintest of scents. In short, she smells real good!!

Ummm, where was I? Oh yes, Downy..

Upon opening the trunk our worst fears were proven to be true. The bottle of Downy had in fact spilled. But not only spilled, it had flipped neatly upside down in the wheel well and emptied…completely. In addition, since this was a truly large bottle of Downy, the blue liquid filled the wheel well right to the top, its surface coming flush with the floor of the trunk. We both stared at it for a moment, then almost simultaneously we broke out laughing. Better than crying, I suppose.

Getting a cup from the house, I bailed out the wheel well to the best of my abilities, leaving a blue stain on the snow in the driveway that remained until the next large snowstorm. I then stuffed an old blanket into the wheel well to make sure no Downy contaminated any other present or future contents of my trunk.

And even now, several weeks later, every time the weather warms to freezing or above (such as today) the entire interior of the car is filled with the aroma of Downy, its springtime scent bringing with it the memories of a warmer season, and  hopes for an early return to sunshine.
