This is interesting, but it's really long, so you might want to put aside a few minutes, especially you ladies...

under my thumb is my favorite stones song. daniwillkillyou January 17 2005, 19:19:03 UTC
this is all bullshit.

deep elm has released compilations with multiple female bands on it, like jejune and pogoh.

you can't say a label is being sexist when there is an obvious lack of female involvement in the first place. i mean, if you want the government to start dictating yr music, maybe we should ask them to enforce affirmative action upon indie labels, making them sign bands that they don't feel are good enough to sign just to fill their "women in bands" quota.

as far as all these lyrics go, apparently i am a "man-hater" based on the shit i have written in the past. they are lyrics, poetry, they're made to be metaphorical and flowing and emotional and fantastical. that's what makes them beautiful. that's what makes an artist an artist and a writer a writer. not to mention these are all based in basic human emotions. hurt, pride, revenge, longing, jealousy. music doesn't have to have an underlying political message to be meaningful. it just has to make someone feel what the author was feeling. make someone relate and say, "yes. that is exactly how (s)he made me feel. they referenced rock tonic juice magic by saves the day... when i hear that song, it reminds me of a girl yeah, my old best friend. who hurt me just as much as any ex-boyfriend has. so it's scary and misogynistic coming from a man's mouth, but what if it came from mine? would it then become acceptable? because THAT, to me, is sexism in and of itself.

people do take it too far, and yes, there is a point where you have to wonder why the fuck someone would say that in a song, or in general, as in the case of glassjaw. that goes beyond expressing hurt and disappointment and rage. that reduces the author to acting like an immature child, calling the subject petty names in order to get a reaction.

as for cover art, who are we to say that the statue of david is wrong? that is essentially what we are doing. in the case of hot rod circuit, i've pretty much recreated that cover a million times, there was just no body there to photograph it. that is what happens. you hug yourself, you cry, your hair is in your face, your clothes are ruffled, you bra hangs out of your tank top. how else would you rather they depict a sad woman? pouting perhaps? yeah, that's a world better...

something corporate's i want to save you is, again, just another example of typical, hot-blooded emotions within a relationship. you're in love with somebody, or you think you are, you think they are beautiful, brilliant - amazing, of course you want to save them, be it from sex parties, alcohol or themselves. what nineteen year old hasn't thought that? what PERSON, regardless of age, hasn't thought that?

(amanda, i love you and i'm not attacking YOU here, i know it's in your journal, but i just think this is fucking utter shit. xoxox)

Yeah, I understand where you are coming from and completely agree with it. After reading over this I just thought it was interesting, because it's not something you think about everyday. I don't think I ever said that emo was sexist, and then for someone to so blatantly point it out, it sparked a little debate in my head, so I thought I would share it. Like it said, we take the songs and make them our own no matter what sex the singer is referring too, so when someone actually says this outloud it makes you wonder just a little.
The book that it's from was actually written by a guy. Maybe he is trying to over-compensate for that. Like the way he talks about how we see someone's cleavage. I'm sorry *I* didn't notice that girls cleavage, but this guy did. It seems like he feels he has to vindicate that the band meant for you to see it because it clearly jumped out at him. Haha
But dude, I WANTED people to debate this. I didn't write it... but I thought it was an interesting, perhaps not correct, take on things.
