i'm gonna say the canon would be the better choice. i will also admit that i am a canon owner. basically my decison back in august when i bought this was that the canon gives a wider selection of lenses to use, while the nikon d40X can only use certain lenses with autofocus control. with my canon i can use EVERY lens that canon makes, as well as lenses by sigma, tamron, etc. with the nikon, you can only use the lenses approved for that camera.
for most people this really isn't a big deal but i knew that i wanted to make great use of super telephoto zoom lenses for moon photography and nikon just didn't have as many of those lenses for the d40x as canon did for the XTi.
i'm not dissing the nikon, just pointing out what i found to be an extreme limitation.
if whoever you got the camera for like it then it's all good. if they really grow to love photography and run into the limits of the camera they will want to upgrade and certainly can. which is why i got mine, if i lost interest all this stuff still holds value if well cared for. you can't say the same for the tiny and cute point and shoot type cameras. there is no resale market for those because they keep getting smaller and cheaper. the SLR will always have a resale market and different lines to upgrade.
but i don't seem to be loosing interest and now fantasize about upgrading my body while keeping my same lenses, and of course buyign new bigger lenses. mmmmmm
