Watch the future rise again

First: Hello and welcome to all my new friends! If you want to know anything, feel free to ask. I have an intro post as my first entry, but it's mostly based around my "dislikes" more than anything. Quite frankly, it makes me seem more aggressive than I really am. I'm not terribly aggressive, I'm just cautious with random adding. You all seem pretty fantastic, though. I'm not worried. ♥

So, it looks like My brother, sister, Brett and myself will all be on the same flight to Vancouver. My brother is only staying in Vancouver for a week and he's leaving when my sister leaves, which makes me feel a lot better. I'm fine with him coming along because I think it will be really nice for him, but sometimes, spending time with him is a bit like babysitting. Especially since he's prone to major mood swings, he's super-sensitive and gets unreasonably angry sometimes. He's going to be staying with Brett and I at Brett's parents house. I'm worried that he might get moody/upset, but he's already promised he won't. I guess we shall see?

Brett and I get to stay longer than initially planned, which is AWESOME. Very excited about this.
I had minor heart attack last night when I realized we had a hitch we majorly overlooked when planning our Harry Potter Night! We did not think of transit. Durrr. So, considering we already bought our midnight premiere tickets, our plan is we're going to hang out downtown until transit starts up again. Which is at 5AM. So, uh, we'll have roughly 2 1/2 hours to sit in a 24 hour cofee shop and try and stay awake. There's one literally a three minute walk away from the theater. But oh man, it's going to be an adventure and half! I'm excited and a bit freaked out. Krysta already said she's cool with it, which is awesome. So there's going to be at least five of us who are going to be sleep deprived and giddy (hopefully giddy instead of grumpy!).

AIDS Prevention South Sask had a garage sale to raise funds. Brett and I donated two boxes of miscellaneous things and our micro-suede recliner couch. We initially got it from my parents when I moved out, and while it was very comfy, it was too bulky and was driving me completely batty. So it's GONE. HOORAY. Now our living room is nice and open. We're looking to get beanbag chairs and another bookcase. Because I -really- need it. I'm going through my books and I'm going to donate some. *GASP*. I'm at about 15 books, but I'm probably looking to fill the box. Even then, I'm still doubling up my shelves. I don't like it. Anyways, I finally got around to organizing my books as best I could so now I have a sexuality & feminism shelf.

Today is the first day of summer, the solstice AND National Aboriginal Day. Cheyenne stayed over last night and we stayed up really late browsing creepy ghost sites, so we woke up late! Boo! We did get there time enough to see my dad, though.
Here, have some pictures:
So first thing, my dad and my uncle! My dad is the one with the green top.

For those of you that are new, I shall clarify: I'm Red River Métis or French Métis (capital "M"!), meaning I'm from the lineage that can be traced back to the Red River. My ancestry is French and Cree on my father's side and my grandma was one of the last fluent-speaking Michif elders. She passed away two years ago. My dad and my uncle build traditional Red River carts. We're one of the only families in the world to put them together traditionally. Meaning, there are no screws or bolts holding them together! It's really neat!

FYI, my mom is Cree, and we're treaty 4 First Nations, so I'm pretty much a Cree girl by default. But I identify as Métis, as well, though many assume that means I am not treaty. Here in Canada, "metis" (sometimes spelled with a little "m" to distinguish) can also mean any mix of Native and European ancestry. Métis is a term that at one time meant only "French Métis", but it's changed to encompass all people of European and Native decent. This is why I always say I'm French Métis or Red River, because my people have a distinct culture, meaning we have our own distinct language (it's a mix of Cree and French), religion and cultural practices that not all people who are metis have. If you want to read more, you can do so here! There's even a little section on Red River carts.
There's your Native Studies lesson for the day!

You don't want to get cut with this!

There's Cheyenne (my sister) standing around and my Uncle.

It's also Native Prairie Plant Week! There was a kiosk behind my dad's station giving out native plant seeds so we're going to make seed bombs!

I'm always sad when people think there's nothing on the prairies. We're bursting with life. And very unique life at that! If you'd only look closer. Trees and mountains are overrated!

Sweet is this really snazzy cafe that has vegan gelato. And unicorns that crap cupcakes.

Mmmm, unicorn crap.

I had to pick this up:

Books that I'm donating. So far, anyways.

My feminism/sexuality shelf! Yay! I hope to make it grow.

And here's my new books for today!
