Returning back to their own "world" had stolen the memories of this place, so when he returned, it was as if nothing ever happened - that he didn't just spend a few months in this bizarre City that was supposed to be a Nexus, potentially connecting all worlds, or just having this omniscient ability to pull and yoink people out of their respective "homes" and into this place.
So upon returning, you could say Roiben was disturbingly muddled and had stood in a random part of the City. The answers to mental questions like where am I or what is this place took a few minutes to appear, and without much hesitation, it all returned to him from the moment he had arrived to the City the first day and to the point where he had departed
( ... )
[Some great curse. Kaye had been pestered by a number of Arabian Nights-styled persons and events. Their apartment was full of sand. There were pillows and rugs of bold, rich colors, gleaming gold, strange musical instruments. Flowing fabrics covered the windows as drapes. It was like some kind of Arabian faerie kingdom. And Kaye didn't like to think about that
( ... )
[Roiben wasn't sure to think when she opened the door - he knew time passed differently in their own 'world,' and the fact that he didn't have any memories of coming here back at the courts didn't give him the moment to actually miss her.
It was still slightly overwhelming, with the new exposure to what he saw of the, um, new decorations in the apartment? But he was more muddled and overwhelmed by Kaye's greeting. Naturally, Roiben was the taller and bigger of the two, so catching her was easy enough, but she did manage to make him stumble a few steps backwards.
He winced with a tinge of guilt. How long has it been? He was hoping it wasn't too long.
Either way, his arms enveloped around her into tight, firm embrace, and he pressed his cheek against her temple.]
[Kaye hugged Roiben as if he would vanish again at any moment. After she got that out of her system, she finally answered him, trying to think.]
Two or three weeks.
[She didn't exactly keep up with the precise amount of days, but it felt like a long time. She was so glad he was here again, and yet, she wasn't, because it meant he was away from home too. And back in the City. But she didn't think about that right now.
After a moment, though, she pulled back from the hug and her expression suddenly changed to fury with the remembrance of the acorn message he left her. She hit him on the arm, but not hard at all - she had no hope of hurting him physically, nor did she want to. It was more just a gesture to show she was mad.]
[He supposed that wasn't too bad before, it was that she was by herself with Cornelius for a matter of months. Still, he wished that he could have taken her with him, or if it was her that the City sent back home.
He was about to question and see if she found the message he left her, but the hit on the arm had at first confused him. But then that just made him realize that she did get the message.
His reaction was to first blink, and then he slowly started to smile a bit awkwardly; it almost looked like an amused smirk.]
I see. Time flows differently back in our world, Kaye. Trust me when I say I did not have enough time to even involve myself in some "trouble."
[Why was he smiling? For a mere few seconds her anger flickered and she almost seemed guilty, or worried that he did get into trouble. But her temper flashed up again, if quietly.]
Well.. good.
[Real eloquent, Kaye. She tried to glare, but she only glared at his chest.]
But you could have left a better message behind.
[Before she had wished that Sarah was still there so they could have gone on with their scheme to make Roiben worry. But now she found that she wouldn't want to go through with it anyway.]
[Yes, he supposed the message left behind wasn't exactly informative nor exactly, erm, comforting. But it's not like he had the time to just leisurely write a letter that would explain everything. Whatever 'everything' was anyway.]
You should know that I would, if the circumstance would give me the time. [He sighed a little - although he really couldn't blame her reaction, but there was really nothing he could, well, do at that point.]
Forgive me. That was all I could think of at that certain time.
[She listened to that familiar sigh and his explanation. She wasn't exactly comforted by it, but.. it did make some sense. He didn't have time? How did the City decide to take people home? Did they just give them a five-minute notice or something?
Kaye shook her head a little as she continued to gaze down, looking like a very green, upset harem girl. She finally raised her gaze to meet his, looking less angry than she seemed before.]
So, that was the first thing that popped into your head? Stay out of trouble?
[Now she just seemed amused, but she tried not to show it.]
[There were many things that did run through his head at the moment, and he wasn't exactly sure why he settled with 'Stay out of trouble.' He couldn't precisely recollect his train of thought the moment the City took him away.]
Perhaps... [His reply came out slow with a thoughtful edge to it.] However, I'm sure everything else that I could have written in its place, you would have already known.
Maybe... [Kaye agreed reluctantly and thoughtfully, just like his 'perhaps.' She stared up at his face again. He didn't look much different, but.. she couldn't help but wondered what was going on there. Home.
Forgiven? Maybe. Probably. She still wanted to feel righteously angry, but instead she just felt relieved. She tugged on his arm unceremoniously to lead him inside. The door was still opened, but it was covered with beaded drapery on the inside anyway.]
You didn't happen to meet any genies on the way here, did you?
[Genies were a lot like faeries, she thought. Always granting wishes but in a messed up way. What if there was some kind of catch here? She didn't want to think about it.]
[Roiben was easily pulled into the apartment, and raised an eyebrow at the, um, decoration of their temporary residence..]
Genies, I see? That would explain your ensemble, along with everything adorning this place. [He shook his head.] But to your question, no, I have not. [He figured that was a fortunate thing, since the curses usually had a messed up edge to them. He scanned the area, taking the familiarity in (or, what he could recall through all the new decorations of the day), and glanced back at her.]
I do trust that you have been staying out of trouble, correct? [He had a bit of a stern, almost scolding expression on his face now.]
['Ensemble.' Yeah, that was right. Kaye thought it was cute at first, until she realized she couldn't remove or glamour the clothing. At least it was mostly comfortable. Except the exposed stomach part. But she seemed relieved that he hadn't run into any genies.
She gazed around the the apartment as if she was entirely used to it and released his arm after brushing her fingers against the bracelet she gave him.
At his question, Kaye backed away a step and looked at him, considering whether she should just tell him or be a little...tricky. He didn't exactly deserve it, but the message he left did upset her. A slow grin spread over her face, unreadable as to the fact if she really did get into trouble or if she was just trying to mess with him.]
[The corner of his mouth twitched at what she had said - what was she getting at, exactly? He couldn't tell if she really did get in trouble, or she was just testing him.
He sometimes really couldn't tell with her.]
Hn. [He watched her, quietly, but his eyes narrowed a bit.] What would you imagine I do if you have gotten yourself involved in something?

I don't know. Heroically rescue me or something?
[She wiggled one of her ankles to gesture at it, as if showing that her legs were free with no chains anchoring them.]
I don't look like I got into trouble, do I?
[It looked almost absurd for her to be saying that in that outfit.]

He could almost sigh, but he suppressed it and shook his head.]
Asking me that in your current condition is a bit difficult. I suppose this kind of trouble is nearly impossible to avoid, so that would not count.
Reply
Oh.
She glanced down at her clothing, tugging at the sheer fabrics and the baggy pants.]
...my outfit is a condition? What kind of trouble do you mean?
[She tried to suppress a small laugh and failed]
Yeah. Stuff like this doesn't count. [A pause.] But no, I didn't get into any other kinds of trouble.
