Title: Broken Promises--Peter/Wendy
Author: faith_adeline
Word count: 693 words. (Sorry it's so short, but I wanted to get it all written down before I turned back to doing homework. Boooo, homework.)

“Never-never land,” he’d whispered. “Second star on the right and straight on ‘til morning. Come with me, Wendy. Just think of all the fun we’ll have!”

How they ran. Leaping, soaring, flying over mountains and lagoons, each day a new adventure. She had been happy, always wearing a smile that was his all his. “Wendy, promise me you’ll never leave.”

“I promise, Peter. How could I leave?”

Peter looked down into the lagoon, bathed in the shadows of the forest around him. Jasmine bloomed, sending its sweet scene into the air, enveloping the laughs from below. Peter Pan: the boy who never grew up. He felt a strange emotion overtake him. His knees were pulled tightly against his chest, his knees resting on the fabric of his pants. He turned to Tinkerbell, who mirrored his position beside him. The green of her dress almost blended into their surroundings. “What’s wrong, Peter?” she asked, looking concerned.

“She promised, Tink. She promised. And look at her, just look at her! What could he possibly say to make her laugh like that?”

Tink shrugged her shoulders, her blonde hair white in the moonlight. “I told you she was trouble. You never should have brought her here, Peter. Didn’t I tell you that?”

Peter waved her comment aside, his brows scrunching in both anger and confusion.

From beneath them, resting in a soft patch of grass, the lagoon lapping quietly alongside them, Wendy Darling sat in the lap of Hook. “Tell me another story, James,” she sighed, her red of her hair against his shoulder reminiscent to blood.

He wound his fingers tightly with hers, leaning back in thought. “Haven’t I told you all my stories by now?”

“Never.”

“Very well. There was the time I attempted to arm-wrestle a centaur with only three legs. Poor bloke was a dreadfully unbalanced creature. Really, I felt so sorry for him I almost let myself lose.”

Wendy laughed that laugh that was supposed to be his. He can’t have it, Peter thought, it’s mine!

Peter gritted his teeth and flew off, leaving the jasmine and the laughs and the broken feeling in the pit of his stomach far behind him.

“Peter!” Tink yelled behind him. “Peter, wait!”

“Just leave me alone!” he yelled back.

Peter Pan: the poor little boy who just couldn’t grow up. He wiped at his eyes, forcing tears back, shoving them down his throat, refusing to admit they were there. “Wendy, promise me you’ll never leave.”

“I promise.”

He flew higher and higher until he could touch the stars. He flew until he ended back there where it all begin; back where he’d watched a little girl dance around her room, acting out adventures with her younger brothers. How she’d shined. Wendy Darling with her hair so bright and eyes so full of promise and hope. He sat on her windowsill, peering inside the room filled with dust and darkness. Everything was still. He wanted to go back to that first time, back to when the magic was enough to keep her smiling, back when she still--

--but really, what had changed? He hadn’t. Peter took pride in the fact that he never changed. He never grew older or changed his mind. He was the same. She had changed. After a while, her eyes lost that light he’d found so intriguing.

He placed a hand on her cheek, stroking the skin beneath his fingertips. “Wendy, what’s wrong?”

She closed her eyes and smiled softly. “Nothing, Peter.”

“You’re different.”

“I’m not. I’m just tired. It’s not easy taking care of a household of boys, you know.”

“But, you love us. Why should it be difficult?”

“I do love you, Peter. All of you.”

“So, why are you tired?”

“I’m just…” she sighed. “I’m growing up, Peter. I don’t know…I don’t know if I want all of this anymore,” she told him, gesturing around the forest with her hands.

“She promised,” he whispered, staring into his reflection. “Wendy Darling can’t grow up,” he laughed. “She certainly can’t fall in love with him.” He stood, all his sadness turning back to anger. “I won’t let her leave,” he vowed.

I had so much fun writing this. I really want to add more to it when I have the chance to actually sit down and write. Can I just mention how much I adore adore adore this group? Seriously! <3
