Succubus Blues by Richelle Mead

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
What took this and Succubus On Top (my next review) from 4 to 5 stars is that I could not put them down. They were a stand out in a genre that can often times seem either far too overwhelmed with world building and exposition, or like reading the script to a really horrible, low-budget porn flick.

The descriptions were enough to let you see it without making you skim for more dialogue.

The dialogue was funny, sharp, thoughtful, and captured the essence of the characters well. Seth's emails to Georgina had me laughing and falling under his charm as well. Shy little Seth writing his series that to me was Booth/Brennen-esque and held the same draw.

I didn't expect Georgina being someone I could relate to. Not in the whole succubus, attractive, etc. etc., but in her actions, thoughts, doubts, concerns, and her obsession with books.

Her group of friends: the two vampires, the imp, her demon boss and his angel bff were also so easy to like.

Yes there's the whole part of her job that is turning men to sin, and winning more for team evil, but the book doesn't paint the world (or Georgina or any of her friends/associates) in such terms. Everything is shades of gray.

Of course there's also the part of her job where she's an assistant manager of a bookstore.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this book/series. It's an enjoyable and entertaining read.

I downloaded this as the FIRST BOOK to the Kindle I got for Christmas, and half way through it I ended up downloading the other three in the series that are out right now.

I finished book #2 today as well. So moving on to review that...

Succubus On Top by Richelle Mead

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I am liking the characters more and more with the addition of this book, and my devouring it today. I also read this on my Kindle, and with these two books I keep forgetting that I am reading on a device and not reading a real book. Rather disconcerting when you go to try and turn the pages and realize you need to press a button instead like you have for the last several chapters.

Georgina is really growing on me as a favorite character. Her vodka snobbery especially amuses me.

I liked the addition of Bastien the incubus and more glimpses of Georgina's past. Seth was adorable and sweet and unbelievable as usual. Carter just continues to grow on me. Who could dislike a sarcastic, smirking, slob of an angel?

Again, I just want to praise the sex scenes (of which there are a lot fewer than you'd imagine for a succubus). They are well written and not beating you over the head with a large mallet that is labeled SEX in large, blinking, neon letters. Not overly graphic with the course words and language that is so prevalent, and annoys me so greatly.

Already purchased the next two books in the series and look forward to reading them as well as looking for hard copies to pick up along the way.
