In the past few months I have started giving inexpensive surprise gifts. If I see something I know someone will really like, I get it and give it to them. There's no occasion, I just think they would like it. :) It's a lot of fun, actually, and gives the recipient a nice surprise. I don't know if it would work with more expensive gifts, but something not too expensive that suddenly shows up is a nice way of saying "I was thinking of you".
