Feeding Ducks

Jan 20, 2006 14:40

So recently, I made a small comment on a friend's journal about how it's bad to feed ducks. Unfortunately, I seem to have upset some people, which happens quite often. I think perhaps I did not articulate myself enough...so here is why you should not feed ducks ( Read more... )

Hi.

You don't know me, but I follwed a link to your post through the fracas over waterfowl feeding.

I stayed out of it on the other journals, (because all it was going to do was piss people off further) but wanted to give you a bit of support from one who has taught environmental education, volenteered and worked as paid staff in environmental non-profits dealin with water quality, as well as working for the Park and Forest Service and being a docent at Northwest Trek.

In other words, I know that of which I speak.

Thank you for sticking to your guns and attempting to educate people. It is not your fault if they want to "kill the messenger" because they don't like the message.

You are 100% correct.

These ducks and geese should be migrating and eating healthy food, and they are not.

Feeding a wild animal eventually sentences it to death.

As yes, there are a LOT of problems in this world that create pollution, but saying "Fuck it, I'm going to do what I want because it's not the bigger problem." is not the answer.

I've worked on studies regarding the amount of duck and goose poop in our area lakes when they stay and feed rather than migrate.

A duck creates FOUR POUNDS of poop a day.

A full grown goose can create SEVEN pounds of poop a day.

In addition to adding to the problems of fecal choliform bacetera, the nutrient load creates toxic algea blooms that smother aquatic life and can kill fish.

In any event, thank you for trying to teach others to do the right thing.

It's not easy.

Thank you! ^_^ I'm glad someone is on my side about this. I've read your livejournal before, while browsing through friend's friendlists. Would you mind if I add you to my list?
