Just stop. The report did not vindicate you. It did not declare that you had not violated ethics laws. Although it did affirm your right to fire personell it also stated pretty clearly that you violated the Alaska state ethics laws. So stop celebrating your innocence. You aren't.
Instead just put that goofy smile on your face, duck your head a little and say, "You know what, I thought I was doing the right thing but looking back it's possible that I was just a bit over-zealous." Practice it a few times and you'll deliver it with your own special brand of folksiness.
Seriously - your current response is as silly as when Bill Clinton said he didn't inhale. Most of us don't care what happened in Alaska but we do care how you respond to the investigation.
And while your at it, go see an opthamologist. You need to get that eye taken care of.
