"It was just that she couldn't bear to be wrong again.  To wake up beside one more person in the morning thinking: Who in the world is this, and how on earth did he or she get in my bed?  Her bed, a massive thing draped in silk, was special to her.  Analagous really to a secret chamber of her heart.  When this space was defiled, even by her own bad judgment, perhaps especially then, she felt terrible, as if she'd been stabbed."
