I'm a Sam-lover. I admit it. Season 5 is probably my favorite season because of how Sam's character was presented. And to all the people who are complaining that Season 6 is all about Saaaaam and how he lost his souuuul and now he's saaaaad because he has it back: au contraire.
Season 6 has been about Dean's reaction to said events. Which is fine--I love me some Dean too. But let's have some balance, eh, Show? All of a sudden, Sam's Sam again and has Dean's back (for which I am so thankful), and the writers decide to shove him in the back seat of the Impala while Castiel gets to ride shotgun for a while.
I understand that we needed to know what was going on with Cas and the war in Heaven, and his backstory was interesting (if a little creepy to know that he was invisibly stalking Dean so often--forgive me, shippers, but that is not endearing). But I swear, even Bobby got more lines than Sam this episode.
And it's not just this one. (Soulless!Sam wasn't exactly an elocutionary guy.) Sure, there has to be tension in order to keep people's interest, but Sam isn't a plot device. He's a main character.
Maybe it's all the stuff going around on tumblr, but to me, there is no argument about whether Supernatural is a show about Sam and Dean, or a show about family. It's about Sam and Dean. It's always been about Sam and Dean.
And Sam and Dean are all about family.
Notice that people don't say, "Oh, it's this great show about how important family is." No, they say, "It's a show about two brothers who love family more than anything else." The importance of family is a theme of Supernatural. Including Bobby and (now) Castiel in that circle of family is fine. But when push comes to shove, it's about two brothers.
Heck, I'll say it now, I would be happier having Sam and Dean drive off in the Impala with all other supporting characters dead when Supernatural ends than have Castiel made a permanent addition to the boys on their journey. Stow the "you're like a brother to me" crap. Call me heartless, but I hated even Adam from the get-go, before we knew it was a ghoul.
Sam and Dean are the Winchesters, no one else. Even with the history they have with Bobby and Cas, there are connections between Sam and Dean that don't include anyone else, even if they are part of their adopted extended family.
I want Supernatural to get back to that.
