Thoughts On X-Men: First Class; Fanfic Progress Report

So, I saw X-Men: First Class on Thursday. And I'm not going to do a full review of the film or anything like that, since I suspect that, like me, a lot of you have seen all I might say on your f-lists already. I will say, however, that it blew X2 and X3 completely out of the water (not at all hard with X3 and its mess they generously called a storyline, but that's another story) and, I confess, I thought it was better than X-Men 1.

Right, I lied. I will end up talking about the things I liked most. First, Wolverine's cameo. Much as I found the growing tendency of the X-Men films to be the Wolverine Show as something quite aggravating, his there-and-gone appearance was a fantastic little moment. Speaking of the funny bits, Charles and his terrible but hilarious pick-up spiel. I mean, what even. Though, to be honest, I'd have been interested just to see what he came up with next. And while on the subject of Charles... Mystique was his little sister?! Totally out of left field, that one, but possibly my favorite surprise bit of backstory in the entire film.

Oh. Oh. And...

Erik and Charles. So, yeah. You know, the funny part is I've been a diehard Magneto/Mystique shipper since X1. Diehard. And then comes this movie and the subtext that is so damn close to being text with Erik and Charles. And suddenly there's a ship war in my head. Sigh. But, that aside, I loved the dynamic between them and I really, really loved Erik. Favorite character in the film, easily. I always found Magneto fascinating, but now... I don't think the full tragedy behind his story hit me until this film and it makes me want to go all AU and return to a fandom I left behind years ago to do one of my repair jobs again. Dear God, I really should have seen this coming.

On another note, though... Charles. Did you really say "just following orders" to a Holocaust survivor? Heat of the moment, I guess he didn't have time to think, but my God, anything else would have been better.

In other news, I've been, slowly but steadily, tinkering away on my Tudors and Hetalia fics, and shockingly, my Inception genderbend has actually seen some work in the past few days. I'm hoping this means that my Inception muse will be back soon, though with my X-Men muse apparently having been resurrected after over three years (going by the completion date on my single fic in the fandom), God knows what's going to happen next in my mind.
