Tess brushed her fingertips longingly over the spines of the textbooks sitting on the shelves, desperately wanting to take them all from the shelf and read them one by one, absorbing their knowledge bit by bit. Tess’s feet seemed to have a mind of their own as she shuffled down the aisle, and unknowingly straight into a crouching man,

Tess stumbled before tumbling ungracefully atop of the darkhaired man who had been reading a book moments ago and was now laying sprawled underneath Tess, a blush staining his cheeks.

“Oh my god, I’m so sorry,” Tess gushed, pulling herself upright in a rushed movement. The man laughed reassuringly as he too got to his feet, placing the book he’d been reading a moment ago back on the shelf. “Oh, do you take psych?” The man laughed again, and the sound filled Tess with an odd fulfilment.

“Oh, no. Actually, I’m working on an article for the Daily Planet. I’m doing my internship there,” the man explained. He offered his hand, which Tess shook politely, “I’m Clark Kent.”

“Tess Harding. I’m a Drama student, junior,” Tess offered, smiling at Clark who nodded in return. “Wow, the Daily Planet? That must be amazing.” Clark nodded again as he slide his hands in his jean pockets.

“Tess!”

Isabel’s annoyed shout snapped Tess back to reality and she remembered exactly who se was in the bookshop with and what she was meant to be doing.

“That’s my friend. I have to go. It was nice meeting you Clark,” Tess said, moving to leave but Clark’s gentle, yet unyielding hand clasped her wrist, stopping her in her tracks.

“Wait, what dorm do you live in?” Clark asked hurriedly. Tess cocked an eyebrow at his boldness, at which Clark shifted nervously. “It’s just, I thought maybe I could take you to lunch one time. If you want of course.” A small smile turned up the corners of Tess’s mouth and she nodded her agreement.

“Stevenson Dorm, room two-oh-eight. I’m free tomorrow at one,” Tess offered coyly. Clark grinned bashfully, which caused butterflies to flutter in Tess’s throat.

“It’s a date,” Clark exclaimed. Tess nodded one last time before pecking Clark on the cheek and slipping out of the aisle.

As she exited the shop, Tess swore the sun looked a little bit brighter.
