Tess sunk gracefully into the metal seat, smiling briefly at the man across from her. She lifted the large menu and opened it gently, her eyes breezing across the miniscule writing.

“The traffic on route nine is atrocious at this hour, I was stuck in a jam for ten minutes,” she said, her eyes flickering up to meet his grey ones.

“Yes well, I suggest taking route five next time, it’s always empty,” he offered, smirking slightly at her. Tess nodded, as if in agreement, and placed the menu back on the table. “Julian Sark,” he drawled, placing his hand out in front of him. Tess took it politely and shook it.

“Tess Harding,” she replied, slipping a strand of hair behind her ear nervously. She was so unsure how to act in front of this man, which was a foreign feeling to her, so she kept her mouth shut as the waiter approached.

“Sir, are you ready to order yet?” the waiter asked a moment later when he reached their table. Sark nodded and stared at Tess.

“Oh, um, just a salad thanks,” she murmured, not even bothering to look over the menu properly. The waiter glanced at Sark, who seemed to take a moment to think.

“I think a bottle of Port, say 78, should suffice,” he insisted. The waiter scribbled something down on his pad as Tess shifted uncomfortably in her chair.

“Actually, I don’t drink, so just a water for me thanks,” she muttered, growing steadily uneasy by the moment. Something about Sark’s stare made her feel as if she were twelve years old and living in Idaho with Nasedo again. She definitely did not like it.

The waiter wandered back to the bar and Sark’s smirk widened ever-so-slightly.

“Have you got the information I wanted Ms Harding?” he asked, his tone laced with curious impatience. Tess cringed mentally as she placed the folder she had drawn out of her handbag on the table in front of him. Sark picked it up and opened it, quickly reading through the pages within. After several silent moments, he snapped the folder shut and smiled. His smile was somehow more off-putting than his smirk. “Good work Ms Harding.”

Tess inwardly sighed with relief. It hadn’t really been too hard to sneak into the CIA and steal the files her boss had asked her for, but she had heard stories of men who had been slaughtered by Julian Sark. Although she had her powers, although she could kill him with a thought, she couldn’t help but think that there was more then meets the eye to Sark.

“Thank you sir,” she stumbled out as the waiter returned with their drinks. When he left seconds later, Sark raised his glass to a toast. Tess awkwardly raised her water and tapped glasses with his.

“To the beginning of a wonderful partnership,” he whispered huskily, and Tess couldn’t help but be turned on by the look in his eyes. They were so extremely expressive and Tess could only imagine the emotions that had raced through them before.

As Tess sipped her water, she smiled. Oh yes, this was only the beginning.
