Title: the sun's on my back, and i can breathe
Rating: PG
Pairing: Dean/Jo (pretty much)
Warnings: fairly angsty, second person POV.

Word Count: 330 (sorry!)
Note: I'd say sometime soon after No Exit. Obviously around Christmas time.
To say you’re surprised is a gross understatement of what you’re feeling at this moment. You wouldn’t have believed it if someone had told you just five minutes ago, but here you are, clutching a worn, coffee-stained envelope between your pale fingers. Your name is scrawled in a familiar mess of letters that makes your heart pound and your mouth dry and your fingers shake as you tear open the envelope.
And as cliché as it is, you can’t stop the little gasp that escapes your lips.
Of all the things you thought you might find, a tacky dollar card with a jolly fat Santa printed on the front was definitely not on the list. It lies desolately on the dirt ground for a long moment, staring pathetically up at you before you bit down hard on your lip - a muffled whimper - and stoop down to get it.
I’m sorry, if all he’s written underneath the pre-printed we wish you a merry christmas and a happy new year. A low chuckle escapes your throat as you try to imagine Dean writing this, sitting in his pretty Impala while Sam uses the restroom at some dingy rathole gas station. Maybe he’d be humming a little holiday tune - Grandma got run over by a reindeer, you bet.
You slip the greasy envelope in the pocket of your worn jeans, then take one last look at the tacky card - memorize the amused-looking Santa in your mind, you could use some holiday cheer - before ripping it straight down the middle, and again, and again, until all that’s left is tiny shreds that you toss in the bin - hands still shaking like a leaf on the wind.
You sigh, smile tightly, and walk out of the post office. The sun beats heavy on your leather-clothed back and your lips turn slightly more upwards at the thought that wherever Dean is, he can feel the same sun.
He never had anything to be sorry for anyway.
