Dean Winchester shut the door to his black Impala. He stared blankly at the open road ahead of him. He didn’t even bother to check his phone this time. He knew that there still wasn’t anything new.

Only one thing left to do now, he thought silently to himself. Their dad was still missing. He had gone out towards California. It was a long ways from New Orleans. And it was near Sam. Dean wondered what Sam’s reaction would be when he showed up at Stanford. Probably not so good.

Dean knew how much Sam had hated their life before he left for college. When they were younger, it was easier to pretend that Sam didn’t mind it as much as he did now. But as he got older, it became increasingly obvious how much Sam just wanted a normal life. Dean felt almost guilty pulling Sam away from the life he had always desired so badly.

Almost. Family was more important than anything else. It was more important than Sam’s desire for a normal life. Sam wasn’t normal. None of the Winchesters were normal.

Dean suddenly turned and started to search the backseat for a map, something to guide him to California. Dean had made a few hunting trips on his own, but he always had a knack for getting lost. When he went on hunts with his dad, his dad always seemed to know where they were heading. Dean needed a map, but unfortunately the backseat was empty.

“Okay, that’s fine,” Dean muttered to himself as he started the car. Somehow it wasn’t the same without another Winchester in it. That’s why he was going to go get Sam. Dean hoped he was heading the car in the right direction as he steered the car onto the seemingly endless stretch of highway. He knew he was heading towards California, how to get there, was still unknown. Just like the location of their father. Just like Sam had been for the past four years.

For the past four years, Sam had essentially been missing. To Dean, anyways. Their dad drove by Stanford whenever he could just to check up on Sam. To make sure he was still there alive. Sam never knew or he never confronted their dad.

Dean never went with him to see Sam. It was too painful for him. He didn’t want to see Sam there at college. Happy. Not that he didn’t want to see Sam happy. He just didn’t like the idea of Sam being happy and unworried while Dean and their dad put their lives on the line trying to protect innocent people all across the country. And Sam got to be one of those innocent people.

Dean was almost jealous of him sometimes. There were times when Dean wished he could pretend like he didn’t know what he knew. That it didn’t exist. That he could be normal. But after having seen what he had seen, Dean knew he could never be normal. He could never go back and pretend that he didn’t know about those things. He could never be innocent like that again. Dean knew that. He just couldn’t understand why Sam didn’t know that either.
