You flip aimlessly through your old photo album, smiling a little at the pictures of a small, blond boy, sitting on his daddy’s shoulder, building a sandcastle with his mummy’s help. The pictures get less cheerful as the boy grows older, until the dad disappears and the mum starts to look older, more worn, more miserable. You reach a picture of the boy - an adult now - with a girl. They’re standing on the beach, the girl - tall, tanned and with hair even blonder than the boy’s - looking up adoringly at the boy who is standing behind her, arms around her and head on her shoulder. They both look happy, so peaceful and untroubled and so completely at home on the sunny Australian beach.
The boy in the picture is you, but you don’t know him.
