Speaking of classes, I'm missing some! Hooray! Just bought my ticket to Portland, OR, where the Geological Society of America is having its annual national meeting. Hoping to schmooze it up with potential grad school advisors and such. Oh yeah ( Read more... )

Yay! I only worry that I would be a poor guest; I'm planning on getting in late-ish on a Saturday, spending aaalllllll day Sunday & Monday at the convention, and then leaving early on Tuesday. I'd kind of feel bad if I just showed up to crash on her couch, you know? The awesomest people deserve better than that.

I don't think she'd mind much-- she's pretty easygoing about such things. I'll talk to her if you're interested, but if you're all set no worries.

Ha. This is exactly what finding an advisor is like. It is so much like dating it's frightening. Even once you get to a school the courtship dance continues. And god forbid something goes wrong. Breaking up with an advisor is hell. (I know this only from watching it happen. I have no plans to break up with my advisor.) Really until you are officially signed into a research group, lots of strange date-like behavior takes place. Complete with "I think she likes me, but I can't tell. Oh no. What if she doesn't actually like me?!" angst. Welcome to the life, dear.

Just be careful of any grad schools whose pictures are extreme close-ups of their faces and no body shots, and are in dim lighting. You might not recognize them in real life.
