“This is highly unorthodox,” Adelle Dewitt protests.
“Perhaps.”
The younger and very much blonder woman shrugs as she sits down on the couch with a smirk. Standing beside the couch is a handsome man with a blank expression on his face.
“I’m not quite sure what you think this organization is about, Miss…” Adelle trails off.
“Oh I know all about Rossum and their Dollhouses. And you can call me Ruby.”
“Who sent you?” Adelle asks with a sneer.
“Someone with a much higher security level than you,” Ruby replies with her own sneer.
Adelle clenches her jaw tightly as she resists the urge to call in Dominic to have him take care of the matter. This Ruby character clearly knows someone with enough power in Rossum to be able to just waltz into her office and to simply expect that Adelle would take her problem off of her hands.
“Look I know he looks like a bit of a head case, but he’ll be a good fit,” Ruby states.
“For God’s sake, he’s drooling. Does he even have the ability to use his brain?” Adelle snaps.
“Wipe your face.”
The command is sharp and the green-eyed man obliges. Adelle still isn’t convinced but there was something about him that makes her want to protect him. That alone is dangerous enough.
“If you take him Adelle, there will be a very generous bonus in it for you.”
“Despite what you think, this organization isn’t just a dumping ground.”
“But you do take on unwilling actives,” Ruby points out, “This is really no different.”
Adelle sighs in frustration. There’s nothing that she can really do other than protest. If Harding or someone else had truly sent Ruby to her, then it was more than just her job on the line if she disobeyed.
“Fine. Our standard contract is five years,” Adelle begins but Ruby interrupts her with a casual wave of her hand.
Adelle simply raises an eyebrow.
“There will be no standard contract. He’s a lifer.”
“This is not a prison.”
“No it’s not, but this is a very special case. Once he’s served his purpose as an active, you can put him in the attic,” Ruby flatly states.
“I won’t endanger this house,” Adelle icily replies.
“Don’t worry, Romeo here will be a good boy.”
Once again, Adelle raises one perfectly arched eyebrow in surprise. Their current Romeo was in with Topher being prepared for his release. Ruby stands up and walks over to the window. Despite the fact that she looks incredibly young, she seems to be far older than twenty. Suddenly Adelle wants to be rid of her.
“Very well, Romeo is here to stay, is there anything else that you want?”
“No, not now,” Ruby replies.
When Ruby turns around, her expression is feral and Adelle shivers under the weight of Ruby’s cruel eyes. The blonde nods one more time in Romeo’s direction before she stalks out of Adelle’s office. Adelle’s grateful that she’s gone and somewhat hopeful that she won’t return. She makes her way over to the bar and pours herself a vodka. Glass in hand, she turns around and watches Romeo. There’s still the simple matter of resolving the issue of what to do with him and a part of her wants nothing more than to ship him off to the attic so that she won’t have to deal with him.
It would, of course, be the most prudent thing to do; yet there’s a part of her that’s curious about him. She finds herself wanting to know who he is and what happened for him to be here in his current state. As she stares into his green eyes, she reaches her decision. They can go through the process of turning him into an active. And she’s certain that Topher with all of his misguided intelligence will be able to find something on Romeo’s brain. Something that they can imprint Victor with so that she can find out why Ruby is so desperate to hide him here; Adelle’s certain that they’ll find all of the answers that they need locked away in Romeo’s brain.
