The cheap Armani knock off suit itches something terrible as does the hideous blonde wig, but Cordelia is supposed to be undercover. It was Wesley’s brilliant idea that if she could get a foot in the door at Wolfram and Hart, then they (as in Wesley, Angel and Cordelia) might be able to find out why the law firm was so interested in Angel. As it would turn out Wesley had found an ad for a position as a typist at the law firm. And, of course, it had been decided by Angel and Wesley that she would be the one to try out for the position, although Angel’s promise that he’d buy her a wardrobe of clothes helped to sweeten the deal.

They had all thought that it’d be a breeze for Cordelia to get the position, what none of them had expected was that it had all been an elaborate trap for them. As she sits across from the impeccable Lilah Morgan, she feels nervous and queasy. She can’t help but take in the fancy diplomas on the wall behind Lilah or the fact that the lawyer was wearing a very real Armani business suit that mirrors Cordy’s cheap knock off. Right now Lilah Morgan holds all the power while Cordelia holds none and all the former cheerleader can do is hope that her years of living on the Hellmouth have honed her survival instincts sharp enough to get her out of this position.

Lilah carefully sets the resume that Wesley had typed up on the corner of her desk before sneering at Cordelia.

“What made you think that you could just apply for a job here Ms Chase, even under an assumed name?”
“The fact that I needed money,” Cordelia flippantly replies.
“Why all of the dishonesty then?”
“I had my reasons.”

Lilah stands up with a sigh and she moves to stand next to a window. Cordelia silently watches as the older woman stares out at the city and she wishes that this were over so she could go home, soak in a nice hot tub and enjoy a cup of tea.

“Maybe once upon a time in Sunnydale you were Miss Popularity but you’re in LA now Ms Chase, your bitchy attitude won’t do you any favours here. When I ask you a question, I expect an answer otherwise I’ll just throw you to the wolves.”

The lawyer turns back to face Cordelia with a razor sharp smile pinned on her lips. Cordelia watches in fear as Lilah casually leans against the glass.

“Shall we start again?” Lilah asks.
“I lied because I really do need the money, it’s not as if Angel pays me very well and it’s so expensive in this city. I thought that if I used my real name, then I’d have a black mark against me. And it’s just a typist position, nothing major,” Cordelia says.

She can’t help but feel like Willow Rosenberg with the way that she had babbled out her excuse, even though it was still a lie to a degree. She had tried to stick to as many factual points as possible. Lilah simply raises an eyebrow at her.

“And why should Wolfram and Hart care if we hire someone who’s working for Angel? He really is just a small fish,” Lilah responds.
“I didn’t want to take any chances.”

Lilah stalks closer in her stilettos and Cordelia can’t help but feel like she’s prey for some exotic jungle cat. When Lilah leans forward and rests her hands on the armrests of Cordelia’s chair, she can’t help but think that this was the worse decision that she has ever made.

“What if I offer you a job here, not the typist one as it’s nothing more than rubbish, but a real job, one where you could work under me?” Lilah seductively asks.
“And what does it entail?” Cordelia nervously asks.
“Oh nothing major, a bit of this, a bit of that. All that you would need to do is turn your back on Angel and that pathetic, failed Watcher of his.”
“N-no,” Cordelia replies, hating the way she stammers.
“You and I are more alike than you think. We both want the finer things in life. And I can promise you that a career here will ensure that you get all of those finer things,” Lilah tells her.

Lilah runs her hand along the curve of Cordelia’s cheek before she continues.

“Instead of a cheap knock off, if you say yes, I can make sure that you have a closet full of the real thing, you’d never have to wear the same outfit twice. And working for me would be so much better than working for Angel. No more demon goop to have to wash out of your clothes or hair. No more long hours and clients that can’t afford to pay for his services. At the end of the day, Angel isn’t going to go anywhere. If you work for me, you’ll go far.”

Lilah tugs at the cheap blonde wig until she pulls it off as Cordelia sits there paralyzed. There’s a part of her, that selfish, rich girl back from Sunnydale, who desperately wants to say yes but another part of her, the one that fell in love with Xander and realized that there was more to life than having the best of everything knows that this is seriously wrong. If Angel was nothing, why would Lilah be doing her best to try seduce Cordelia into working for her.

“And what does working under you entail Lilah?” Cordelia asks.
“I can ensure that it wouldn’t be strenuous,” Lilah purrs as her long fingered hands run through Cordelia’s hair, smoothing it out from having been under the wig.
“I take it I wouldn’t actually be working for Wolfram and Hart then?”
“You would be my personal assistant, you could assist me in several ways.”

Cordelia leans up slightly until their lips are almost touching. Lilah makes a slight purring noise as Cordelia gently brushes her lips against Lilah’s. Before the older woman can deepen the kiss, Cordelia’s pushed her back against her desk. She stands up and glares at Lilah.

“We are very much not alike in any way,” Cordelia states. “We might like the finer things in life, but I am not about to betray my friends.”

She turns on her heel and marches to the door. Lilah is strangely silent and it causes Cordelia to turn to face her before she opens the door. Lilah is watching her with predatory eyes and there’s something in the pit of Cordelia’s stomach that almost causes her to go back and to see what really kissing Lilah would be like. But she knows that Lilah is far worse than any vampire she’s ever had the misfortune to face, so she steps out of the door and makes her way to the elevator.

It’s not until she’s out of the building and on the bus going back to Angel’s office that Cordelia feels safe and she wonders what the whole game back at Wolfram and Hart was really about.

* * *

Ten minutes after Cordelia has left, Lilah Morgan is finishing typing up a report about her and their interaction. She’s careful to leave out the almost kiss that affected her more than it should have. Instead she writes up a report that is clinical in language and to the point. The Senior Partners will have to find another way to bring down Angel than through those closest to him.
