He finds it ironic that she sleeps like the dead. It allows him to creep into her bedroom in the dead of night when she is completely defenseless. He likes to watch her in the few hours that remain of the night.
The scent of her innocent vanilla perfume arouses him in ways that blood and savagery never have. As his charcoal flies across the heavy paper, he can see why the soil fell for this girl who straddles two worlds: Slayer and normal girl; girl and woman. He finds himself muzzled by her vulnerability as she sleeps.
He imagines that she dreams of impossible things like Angel, sunshine, and a world without demons. He wants her in so many ways that it makes him dizzy: dead and drained, marked and claimed, his vampire queen frozen in this moment forever, his enemy to the very end as they battle for dominance in the ancient dance of vampire and Slayer.
And he knows that if his heart were still beating in his chest, he would easily fall in love with her. Just like his soul and just like he almost has. When he finally finishes his drawing of her, he fills with something akin to sorrow. They are divided and he knows that he cannot let her live for she will eventually see past his face, the one that he shares with her true love and she will destroy him.
If he’s not careful enough, very soon he will be the one who is defenseless.
