Summary: Jo's tired of trying to prove herself.
After the debacle that was Duluth and a possessed Sam Winchester, along with the painful realization that Dean would never care for her like she wanted, Jo had packed things up and wound up in Bellingham. Before settling down, Jo had spent close to six months driving up and down the I-5 trying to prove herself as she took on every single monster that she came across by herself. During her monotonous trips up and down the I-5, she found herself working in truck stops, roadhouses and shabby bars that seemed to litter the I-5. She'd only ever stay long enough to earn her enough money for gas, food and cheap motel rooms before she'd hit the road again looking for the next monster.
Jo found herself living for the hunt, for the thrill and excitement that she experienced every time she managed to destroy some ghost or monster. It wasn't until a hunt went wrong that Jo started to think that perhaps it was time to settle down and that maybe she wasn't cut out to be a solitary hunter. So she found herself a job at a bar where the men, and the few women, who came in every night had no idea about the evil that always seemed to lurk underneath the surface. And she stuck to hunting easy things, like ghosts and restless spirits, in the area. The farthest that she went on a hunt was up to Vancouver where she had taken care of some nasty ghosts. Anything else, she made a call to Bobby and told him to spread the word.
When the woman walked into Jo's bar on a Tuesday night on what had to be the hottest day that summer, Jo was sure that she was just a hunter that Bobby had sent out to take care of a possible werewolf problem. Jo found her eyes drawn to the slim brunette in the tight dark jeans, much like the other patrons in the bar that night. Faith was unlike anything or anyone else that Jo had ever seen before, and for a few brief minutes the desire to run was strong. She instinctively knew that this woman was going to turn her world upside down and completely change everything that Jo had held dear.
In the end Jo stayed where she was, although there was still something in her that needed to prove herself. And she wasn't about to turn tail and run from a hunter that Bobby had out her way to clean up a mess that Jo couldn't take on her own. When the woman sat down on a bar stool in front of Jo, the blonde did her best to act as if everything was normal, as if she wasn't fascinated by the other woman. Jo took her order and waited for her to bring up the conversation of hunting.
That Tuesday night, Jo did her best to hide her disappointment as the brunette did nothing but make desultory remarks about the heat and other such topics. The words that Jo were hoping to hear never dropped from the brunette's ruby red lips and Jo was starting to get frustrated with the situation. When closing time came, the brunette gave her a smirk, dropped some cash on the worn bar top and sauntered out of the bar with a casual Be seeing you around.
It took everything in Jo not to drop everything and follow the brunette out of the bar and.... Jo wasn't quite sure what she wanted to do to the other woman but images of her pushing the brunette up against her pick up truck and demanding that she tell her who she was. Or even better, pushing her up against the cool metal of her pick up truck and kissing her. Jo shook her head of the images and pushed herself to do the chores associated with closing before she grabbed her bag from under the counter and stalked out of the bar. She turns and pulls the door firmly close before locking it, it's a ritual that she's done enough times since the bar owner has entrusted her on the weeknights to handle things by herself. The only thing that's different this hot and muggy Tuesday night is the sensation that she's being watched that she can't seem to shake as she cautiously makes her way to her truck with one hand hidden in her bag grasping her knife.
Perhaps the woman that came into the bar wasn't a fellow hunter. Maybe she was something else, a monster, her mind whispers. She quickly catalogues all the known monsters that she knows that could look like the brunette and she comes up with a blank. She's pretty sure that the woman isn't a succubi or a vampire or even a shapeshifter and she finds herself at a loss for what the brunette could possibly be.
When Jo makes it to her truck uneventfully, she starts to think that perhaps she was worried about nothing. But nothing quickly turns out to be something when she hears a slight hissing sound behind her as she's unlocking the door, as she turns Jo drops the bag and pulls the knife out. What's in front of her terrifies her. It's in the shape of a man with a demonic visage, all yellow eyes and deadly sharp fangs, and Jo's paralyzed with fear.
Before the monster can go in the for the kill, it explodes into ash and dust and Jo's shaking like a leaf when she's confronted by the snarling face of the woman from the bar. She notices the wooden stake in the woman's hand and it strikes her as completely out of place because she's never heard of a monster that you killed with a stick. And she can't quite stop shaking even though the brunette's face is less feral and she's put the stake away.
"What was it?" Jo finally manages to say.
"That? It was a vampire."
"Vampires aren't real."
"Sure they're not."
The brunette turns to go and Jo starts babbling about how vampires really aren't really like any of the other monsters that she's seen and before she knows it the brunette turns to face her again.
"You can believe in succubus and werewolves and shapeshifters but not vampires?"
"Yeah," Jo replies, knowing how stupid she sounds.
"This is seriously fucked up."
Once again Jo thinks that she's going to leave her and for some reason she doesn't want the brunette to abandon her. Not right now when her heart is still pounding in her chest and she's trembling from the fright. It reminds her too much like that last hunt before she settled down. The hunt where she almost died and no one knows, not even her mother or Bobby. Jo knows that she almost died tonight again, this time there's not a mark on her pale skin, and if it wasn't for this brunette woman standing in front of her with her full mouth in the shape of a moue as she tries to figure out what she should do.
"Do you have a place to stay?" Jo asks, and she's proud that she almost sounds normal.
"Yeah some motel up the street."
"That place is bad news. You can crash on my couch."
"Fine."
They don't say anything as Jo climbs into her truck, she places her head on the steering wheel and takes a deep breath as the brunette walks around the truck and climbs in on the other side.
"You okay to drive?"
"Yeah."
"Good, let's get outta here."
"Sure, name's Jo by the way."
"Faith."
They drive in silence, Jo doesn't want the conversation and Faith seems to be taciturn, Jo's not sure if it's from the vampire earlier or if it's because of her. It doesn't really matter to Jo one way or another. All that really matters is that Faith is there with her and for some unknown reason the brunette makes her feel calm and safe. Ten minutes later they're pulling up in front of a shabby-looking apartment building that Jo calls home. Faith doesn't say anything as she follows Jo into the building and up the stairs to the fourth floor.
When they enter the small apartment, Faith suddenly turns the tables on Jo as she pushes the blonde up against the wooden door. Before Jo can say anything, Faith is kissing her and it's almost like she imagined it earlier at the bar, except its Faith who's pushing Jo up against the door as she tastes Jo's mouth. Jo starts to push Faith way, her hands are on the other woman's shoulders but when Faith nips at her lower lip, Jo's lost in the moment and she pulls Faith closer. Faith tastes of cherry lip gloss and of the whiskey that she drank at the bar. It should be unpleasant but it's not and Jo sighs as Faith slips her hands under the thin and worn cotton of her shirt.
Faith suddenly pulls back, her hands lightly resting on Jo's sides as she looks at Jo. Whatever she sees in Jo's eyes causes Faith to pull back even more with a near silent fuck on her lips. And Jo doesn't know what she did wrong.
"I should go," Faith quietly states.
"Why?"
Faith doesn't respond as she moves to the window that overlooks the parking lot. And Jo stays silent and still against the door, afraid that if she moves Faith will leave.
"I'm not that girl anymore," Faith finally responds, "I'm not the type of girl who just screws around and takes everything that she wants without a thought about anyone else."
Jo doesn't know how to respond to Faith's statement.
"I really should go."
"Please stay," Jo asks, even though she knows it's a bad idea.
Faith nods her head as she turns to face Jo again.
"Okay."
"I'll get you some blankets for the couch."
"Sure."
Jo ends up getting Faith settled on the couch before she takes a shower and goes to bed. Sleep seems a long time coming and she keeps waiting for the sound of the front door chain being moved. She doesn't think that Faith will stay the night, and a part of her wonders why she keeps finding herself attracted to these people that don't want to stay. The blank ceiling doesn't have any answers for and eventually Jo slips into sleep.
It seems as if she's just shut her eyes when Faith is shaking her awake and Jo's screaming at the visions that she can't blink away. That night when she almost died when she went after the demon that was only supposed to be a ghost. She's sweaty and shivering at the same time, and she can't say anything coherent. Jo wants to tell Faith that everything's okay that it was just a nightmare, but the brunette seems to know that it wasn't just a nightmare. Faith sits down on the bed beside her and clumsily pulls her into a hug.
Soon the terror passes but Jo doesn't want Faith to let go. When she feels Faith starting to pull back, Jo starts to tell her what she hasn't told anyone, she tells her about the night that she almost died, the night that she learned that if she had kept trying to prove herself she was going to wind up dead. Sometime during their story, the two of them have laid down side by side on Jo's bed and Faith's staring at the ceiling as dawn finally comes and paints it in shades of pink and gold. When Jo's finished speaking, she rolls over onto her side and looks at the blonde.
Faith doesn't say anything but somehow Jo knows that she's not going to leave anytime soon. And for now that seems like it's enough.
