{btvs} donuts (the rewrite)

So apparently I used to write crack....

Title: Donuts (Rewrite)
Author: Aaronlisa
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pairing/Characters: Xander Harris, Drusilla, Angel
Rating: FR13
Disclaimer: Buffy the Vampire Slayer belongs to Joss Whedon and company.
Prompts: The Inspiration's prompt #12: a fic in which a vampire gets ecstatic over the taste of some food (you pick whatever it is...) he eats!
Notes1: This is a rewrite of a fic that I'd written January 2004. The original was rather rough considering it was my second piece of fic that I'd ever posted.
Notes2: While the re-write still remains rather crackish, I've developed some of the angstier tones for the re-write.
Notes3: Set shortly after the events in "Lover's Walk" with references to "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered."
Summary: Xander's on yet another donut run when he runs into a vampire.
Word Count: 2138

There's no rhyme nor reason for her to be in Sunnydale, especially since the stars had whispered to her that Spike had been here lately. But something had called her to this place, this place that had destroyed everything for her. For a place that held so much promise of mayhem and mischief, Sunnydale was really an awful place with it's resident Slayer. Yet the stars had made her dream of the Slayer's pretty dark-haired boy, even Miss Edith had made her think of the boy that she had found herself wanting so much shortly after Angelus had returned to her.

If there was one thing about being a sidekick that Xander Harris hated, it was being nominated for the coffee and donut run. All of the time. It seemed that as of late, everyone thought that he was only capable of fetching food and beverages. Although he was honest about what he couldn't do, Xander was fairly certain that he was capable of a more complicated task. Sure he wasn't as brainy as Willow or Giles, nor was he as brawny as Angel or Buffy, but he surely there was something else that he could be doing. He'd been a part of the group for a lot longer than Oz had been and Oz was never sent out for food.

The thought of Oz just annoyed Xander. For three nights a month, the silent guitarist was pretty much incapable of doing anything other than growling in a cage while one of them watched over him to make sure that he didn't break free. The rest of the month, Oz seemed to possess the abilities of sniffing out Willow, playing the guitar and make deep statements. Unless they were up against a demon that had to be slayed by musical talent, Xander didn't see why Oz got a free pass from making coffee and donut runs.

The fact his animosity towards Oz has something to do with the fact that Willow is somehow making headway with him while Xander keeps beating himself against the brick wall that Cordelia had erected around herself, is something that Xander refuses to think about. Instead he focuses on the fact that he really has nothing at the moment: no girlfriend, a distant best friend (two if you count the fact that Willow won't even look at him and Buffy's trying not to take sides), Oz's mistrust, and the fun of watching Willow and Buffy get all mushy about their boyfriends. On top of that, he's not trusted with anything more complicated than the nightly donut and coffee run.

"Like it'd kill Dead Boy to get the donuts for us," Xander mumbles to himself.

He's lost in his thoughts as he's walking back from the late night donut shop so he isn't aware that he's being followed. It's not until he hear the snapping of a branch from behind him when's walking through the park to get back to the high school that Xander's on high alert. He's well aware that his alertness might be too late to do anything other than see the face of his killer. Still he turns around quickly looking for the possible threat.

"Who's there?" Xander calls out.

He's well aware of how stupid and horrible clichéd it is.

"It's just me," Drusilla says from behind him.

Xander turns to face her, not quite certain how she managed to get in front of him so quickly. "Drusilla.... err... what do you want?"

She smiles at him as she advances, Xander keeps stepping back until his back is suddenly pressed up against a tree and she's right in front of him, grinning her Cheshire cat grin.

"You got away from me because of that nasty girl," Drusilla purrs. "That was very rude."

"Nasty girl? Oh you mean Cordy. Well you did want to bite me," Xander starts to explain and realizes that perhaps mentioning biting wasn't the smartest of ideas when Drusilla's face shifts into the demon's.

She laughs at him. "Are you afraid, sweet boy?"

"Not really because you, uhm, don't want to bite me, why would you?" Xander asks. "I can take you to Angel."

He has no qualms about selling out the other vampire. If he's lucky enough the two of them will manage to kill one another and then he'll have to console Buffy. Not that he wants Buffy because he just wants to get back together with Cordelia but still consoling Buffy might lead to a place that Xander has dreamt about once or twice or maybe a few dozen times. Not that he's counting or wasting time on dreaming about Angel suddenly exploding into a cloud of ash for no real reason.

Xander swallows when he realizes that he's been hanging around Willow for far too long since he's babbling in his mind instead of trying to figure out a way from the vampire. He shifts so that the tree's no longer pressing against his back. Surprisingly enough, Drusilla lets him move.

"I don't want him. He's nasty, all in love with the wicked Slayer," Drusilla says. "The wind has told me about how much fun I could have with my pretty dark haired boy. Don't you want to live forever with me?"

"And have my friends try to kill me?" Xander replies. "Thanks but I'll pass."

Drusilla narrows her eyes and her hands latch on to him. "You don't really have a choice."

"But I don't want to live forever. I mean I am flattered and all but it's just that Buffy and the others will try to kill me. And that's not really eternal is it?"

Logic doesn't really work on Drusilla. And despite the few encounters he's had with her, he's not really sure what would work on her.

"My pretty boy, you'll be drinking her blood before she even knows."

"Alright so I kill Buffy but then there's Angel and trust me when I say that he'll know that's something off."

"Don't mention him, you naughty boy," Drusilla growls.

It might just be his imagination but her fangs seem to be sharper and longer. And despite his desperate glances around the area, he can't find anything that he can use as a stake. All he has is a stupid box of donuts and then inspiration hits him.

"Uhm, I'll make you a deal," Xander says, his mouth horribly dry.

Drusilla's eyes narrow. "The stars didn't mention anything about a deal. But Miss Edith said my dark haired love would surprise me."

"Alright then," Xander says, uncertain who this Miss Edith is. "I'll give you one of these donuts and if you like it, you don't get to kill me today."

She lets him go and laughs at him. He knows that it's not his best idea but despite Angel's protestations that vampires only drink blood, he's caught the brooding vampire sneaking a donut or two out of the box.

"I'd much rather taste you sweet blood, I want to see if it'll burst on my tongue like bubbles."

"Uhm alright, but I think the uh donut would be sweeter," Xander says. (He tries not to focus on the idea of Drusilla biting him and then draining him.)

"Vampires only hunger for blood."

"Have you ever tried a donut?"

She shakes her head at him so Xander opens the box. He picks out one of the jelly ones and hands it to her. She looks at him and then at the donut. For a moment, he thinks that she's about to slap it t the ground when she surprises him by taking it gingerly.

"If you're trying to trick me, the stars will punish you."

"Alright," Xander says.

She bites into it and some of the red jelly squirts out. Drusilla giggles, which is a rather scary sound, even more scary than he thought it would be.

"It bleeds."

"Uh yeah, it bleeds."

* * *

Somehow they wind up sitting on the grass under the tree together, Drusilla had eaten the first one and then demanded another. She kept squealing in delight when a jelly one would bleed. And for some reason Xander had found it amusing, even though she'd make references about how she'd rather he was bleeding because of her.

After she's devoured the jelly ones, Xander convinces her to eat a chocolate one, which she likes because it's sweet and dark, just like the night. Or so she tells him. He finds her joy at the donuts somewhat entertaining. Her joy in the sweet treats reminds him of when he was a kid, back when Willow, Jesse and he were inseparable. They don't really talk about anything other than the donuts but Xander somehow finds himself enjoying the vampire's company. It's better than what awaits him at the library, if he ever gets to go back there.

Finally the box is done. Drusilla looks at him with disappointment.

"They're all gone."

"Yeah," Xander says. "So do we have a deal?"

She pouts at him before she nods. "For tonight, but tomorrow my pretty boy, I'll find you."

Before Xander can respond, Angel seems to melt out of the shadows of the park.

"Drusilla what are you doing in Sunnydale?" Angel asks.

She hisses at him and stands up to face him. Her eyes flash gold at Angel as she moves in front of Xander. It takes a moment before Xander realizes that she's attempting to protect him from Angel. In a way it's rather sweet, if a bit twisted.

"I was just trying donuts, nasty fake Daddy," Drusilla says. "I'll be leaving but I'll be back for what's mine."

She points at Xander as he scrambles to his feet. Angel looks over at him with contempt. Xander doesn't really think that Angel has much room to judge him but it's never really stopped Angel before. Angel grips Drusilla's wrist and pulls her closer to his body.

"If I catch you in Sunnydale again, I will kill you." Angel snarls at her.

She cackles at him before she pulls away from her. She turns about and her skirts flare out. "Daddy can't kill me, he doesn't want to. I know the truth and so do you."

She vanishes into the night, leaving Angel and Xander standing there.

"What happened?" Angel finally asks.

"Not much, I ran into Drusilla when I was coming back with the donuts and she just demanded on trying them. Who was I to say no?"

Angel's lips thin as he presses them together and he clenches his hand into a fist. Xander wonders if now would be the best time to suggest that Angel find an anger management class. Perhaps it'd be better in the safety of the library.

"Somehow I suspect that there's more to the story than that," Angel says. "However, I doubt you'll tell me the truth. Come on then let's finish this errand."

Xander falls into step beside Angel as they return to the donut shop. He's pretty certain that the only reason why Angel ended up where he was is because Buffy decided that Xander couldn't do such a simple task on his own. There's more to him than just goofy jokes. Not that he's about to admit to Angel that he managed to save his own skin by offering a vampire donuts. He's fairly certain that if it had been any other vampire than Drusilla, he'd be dead on the ground before he could have offered donuts to the vampire.

That thought alone sobers him up. He had been rather over-confident in himself and Drusilla's appearance has made him aware that getting donuts and coffee at night in Sunnydale isn't a task without it's risks. Not that he thinks that Buffy or the others have actually spent time thinking about it. He sighs heavily when he realizes that he probably won't be trusted with a task like this again, even though Drusilla didn't kill him.

"Do you think she'll be back?" Xander finally asks.

"Possibly, unless something else captures her attention."

He doesn't ask how likely that is. Somehow Xander knows that she could easily become distracted for awhile before she remembers him again with startling clarity. He'll never be safe but then again, he realizes that he's never really been safe ever since Buffy Summers first walked into his life and he learned her dark and horrible secret. Xander sighs as the clerk at the counter gives them an odd look before packaging the donuts into a box. He doesn't even want to know what the clerk is thinking about them or the fact that Xander was just here.

To be honest, Xander just wants to go home, crawl into bed, and wonder how is life could suck more than it does already.
