Los Angeles was different. There had been a time when it had seemed so commonplace to her but now she was used to sleepy Sunnydale. (Although Buffy wasn't quite sure if most people would consider Sunnydale a sleepy little town with it being on a Hellmouth. Still demons didn't just walk around like they owned the place like they do in LA.) She was only in LA for her cousin's stag and then wedding. Although they had been close growing up, things had changed when she had moved to Sunnydale. Still Buffy had accepted the invite, even if it meant being a bridesmaid. (She'd never tell Anya that the dress that her cousin had picked out was much lovelier dress and the whole experience was turning out to be nicer.)
Buffy sighs as she plays with the cocktail umbrella that had come with the fruity drink that her cousin had insisted she order. Her cousin and friends are all on the dance floor dancing and there's a part of Buffy that thinks that if she hadn't become a Slayer, she'd be more like them: blonde, beautiful and marrying her high school's prom king (or star football player or someone similar.) Buffy sighs when she accidentally snaps the toothpick handle in half.
"Oh my God!"
The shrill voice causes Buffy to jump off her seat and before she knows it, she's engulfed in a semi-familiar embrace. When she's allowed to pull back, Buffy's surprised to see Harmony Kendall standing in front of her. The last time Buffy had seen the blonde vampire was when she was still trying to kill her and extolling the virtues of Spike.
"Uh Harmony?" Buffy quietly says.
"Oh don't worry, I've gone vegan," Harmony chirps as she sits down beside her. "Well not really vegan but I don't drink human blood."
The last part of the sentence is whispered as Harmony looks around to make sure no one's heard her. Buffy tries to wrap her head around the fact but can't seem to understand it.
"LA's not like Sunnydale at all but I love it here."
Buffy tunes Harmony out as the vampire drones on and on about how she loves living the life of a single, young, attractive vampire in the big city. It's not what she would have expected and she can't help but wonder if Harmony's seen Cordelia since she's come to LA. It doesn't seem appropriate to ask so she bites her tongue. When Buffy's cousin comes over to the table and says that she and the girls are going to go to another club, Buffy passes.
"I would have gone," Harmony says. "It's very exclusive."
The way that Harmony says exclusive makes Buffy worry for a moment but before she can ask Harmony's already speaking.
"Not exclusive as in a dying kind of way, it's just all A-list celebs and the very rich. I doubt your friend would be able to get in anyhow," Harmony says. "So is Spike still hanging about Sunnydale? Not that I care or anything it's just that if he's in Sunnydale then I don't have to worry about him trying to crash on my couch or something."
* * *
Somehow Buffy finds herself leaving the club with Harmony and the two walk along the sidewalk until Harmony suddenly grabs her hand and pulls into her a run down building. Visions of her being killed by a nest of vampires run through her mind when Harmony pulls Buffy flush against her.
"Don't worry Buffy, this is a safe place. It's a place where humans and vamps can hang out together. It's also where I call home."
Before she knows it, Harmony's kissing her and it takes Buffy a moment to respond. She stands there stock still, torn between wanting to push the vampire away and from just wanting to revel in the comfort of Harmony's arms. The desire to push her away wins.
"What was that?" Buffy asks.
Harmony shrugs and drags Buffy up the stairs to a dimly lit room. There's a bed and the lamp beside the bed is draped with a silk scarf and for a moment Buffy thinks that this might be some sort of flop house or something.
"Home sweet home," Harmony says sadly. "It's not easy trying to be a vegan vampire."
"This is where you live?"
"I know it's a dump, right? But it's better than the sewers or a crypt. There are others like me who live here and some humans who know about us but are trying to get their lives sorted out as well."
"I guess it's nice enough," Buffy lies.
Harmony sits down on the bed and starts to cry. Buffy finds herself sitting down beside her and throwing an arm over Harmony's shoulders.
"It wasn't supposed to be like this Buffy. I had my whole life planned out. I was supposed to get married to the captain of the football team, have a boy and a girl and live the sweet life in Sunnydale. Instead I got bit by a vampire and my whole life changed. I can't even be evil."
There's no soothing words that Buffy can think of that'll make Harmony feel better so she kisses the vampire again. It seems to stop Harmony's tears and Buffy likes how Harmony feels against her body. Soft in all the right places but not too soft that Buffy would hurt her if things got a little rough.
Soon they're on the bed, their bodies bathed in the soft light from the lamp, their hands and mouths telling each other more about themselves than any conversation they ever had in the past. They both know that this is temporary, that this is just about right now, tomorrow (if not sooner) they'll go back to hating one another with ease, after all their enemies by their own biology.
