It has been a fairly busy week! On Saturday we had a combination party for my graduation and my dad's ordination. Which was good, one of my cousins came unexpectedly who I haven't seen in... probably at least three years? I'd seen his wife at family parties before, but never met her, and I've only ever seen pictures of their son, who is absolutely adorable in person. So that was neat. I made
this dobos torte, which was easy and extremely popular (although it did need 1.5x the chocolate called for), and also a rainbow Jello salad for my uncle who is recovering from surgery.
On Tuesday we saw X-Men, which was quite enjoyable. McAvoy and Fassbender were both pretty great, for the most part. Kevin Bacon was an excellent villain. I liked Raven a lot, although I continue to be a bit annoyed that Mystique only ever gets to be Magneto's sidekick in the movies. Also that Emma Frost was nowhere near as cool as she ought to be. And I wish that the training montage bits had basically been the whole movie, but that is just because I wish that most movies would be all training montage, all the time. In general, I do wish that characters other than Erik and Charles had been able to develop more. Anyway, obviously there are complaints to be made about any movie, and this one certainly did not avoid the general action movie problem of total failure at race and gender, but that does not mean that I did not come home and start (or rather resume) reading the fic ASAP.
Yesterday I remembered that my sister gets HBO to watch True Blood, so I've been watching Game of Thrones! There are so many people, and I only vaguely paid attention to the first episode, so it's been slightly confusing. Especially because the king is still alive, and I thought that it was about people fighting for an empty throne? And I still don't know what the deal was with that circle of dead people in the first scene. So far I very much like Dany, Arya, Ned, and Jon, but this is only on the fourth episode so who knows what will happen. Although I do wish Jason Momoa had a role where he actually got to, you know, speak :(
