A few days ago my mother called me while bored between work and band practice to say she'd stopped at a McDonald's. As someone with Opinions, I took that opportunity to rant at her about how they had Young Justice toys but were only putting out the male characters, because they're supposed to be the "boy's Happy Meal" and disregarding how atrocious ( Read more... )

That does piss me off. The gendered Happy Meals.
Girls play with action heroes! Action Heroes can be girls!

(You do need both tags. Obvs.)

Alternatively, boys can play with those little Barbies or whatever they give out in the "girl" meals these days!

(One of life's little necessities: variation in one's Miley-related tags.)

I overheard two kids conversing the other day.

James - No no no Emily, you can't play with that! Spiderman is a boys's toy!
Mehtab - No! There are no boygirl toys!

(James brings in all the superhero toys and has a real problem with sharing. Mehtab is an awesome little boy who sticks up for everyone. I was so proud of him!)

I also was happy a few weeks ago when this conversation happened:
Daytora (a girl) - Nicholas, you can't be in our tea party! Only girls play in a tea party.
Nicholas (an awesome boy from the older fours' class) - But, I like it. Why shouldn't I play it?
Daytora - Oh. Um. Alright you can play with us.

(Not quite as awesome as the first conversation, but still a step in the right direction.)

Aww, this is great! I mean, not the one who is bad at sharing, but everything else. Children being ~our future~ and whatnot.

(And of course I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with girls being Action Heroes, I didn't mean to brush over it with my original comment.)
