Lara is coming in... approximately one hours! Have I yet begun the paper that is due on Monday and which I planned to finish before she arrived? No! But I have read I'll Get There. It Better Be Worth the Trip, which is a part of LGBT history and therefore totally related to the class! So educational. Completely fascinating to read as a part of history - the first teen book to deal openly with a queer character - but also just well-written. I mean, it's very obviously a product of its time. Partially because of the plot, because while the parts about death and living with your alcoholic mother and having awkward friendships definitely stand up the panic about "queering around" doesn't so much. Also, it reads like an older middle-grade book, with the kind of odd stilted dialogue and strange objection to contractions, the feeling that something is slightly off that you get reading early Judy Blume. Which I know throws some people off, but once you get past it it's neat to see how writing for young adults has changed or stayed the same. Anyway, it was fascinating to read because while the ending certainly wasn't outright happy, it was a lot more hopeful that I would expect from a book that is not only forty years old, but was published pre-Stonewall. Although apparently it was also highly recommended by Catholic schools for pushing the "just a phase" ideology, so it really probably does depend on who is reading it. It's a very ambiguous ending. The cover is awful, though; they really should ban the use of actual people's faces on YA book covers.
Anyway the other option for things to talk about is just how angry I am at so many things to do with politics lately, like oh say for instance how even if you hate women having access to the abortions to which they are legally entitled, there is no reason to deny Planned Parenthood federal funding because they are already not allowed to use what federal funding they do receive for abortions. Or the lack of funding for public media, or heating subsidies, ETC ETC AND SO ON.
Also Nootan is sleeping AS ALWAYS and I'm not sure if it would be too rude to say "Hey, I'm heading out to pick up Lara, please wake the fuck up so we don't have to creep around," assuming she's still sleeping when I leave which is a pretty good assumption. But seriously.
This took a suddenly angry turn :(
