Once Upon an Irish Nightime Creamy

Mar 20, 2010 21:45

today we visited Ireland.

menu was soup and sandwiches. for soup, we had Irish Bacon & Potato Soup, which did need salt and pepper. I rather liked it, but David wanted cheese. David almost always wants cheese, though, so there's no real surprise there.

sandwiches were reubens [yes, I know, but corned beef and cabbage, see?]. they were super tasty. we used some rye bread from the Czech bakery, the sweeter "Bavarian" kraut, and some sort of Irish cheese that had a very familiar flavor and texture, but I can't quite place it. anyway, it was good.

I also made Irish soda bread, just for the heck of it. I made two kinds. one is a plain soda bread, which is basically a big buttermilk biscuit. technique is the same and everything. the other is basically a big enriched buttermilk biscuit, with added sugar, egg, orange peel, and currants. I plumped the currants in rum, just for fun.

the plain soda bread recipe is in one of my bread books. the enriched one we got from our vet this morning, but is online here.

dessert was hot chocolate spiked with Irish Cream. [dessert was supposed to be Apple Pie "Dublin Style," which can be found here and scroll down a bit. but we forgot! so we'll have to make it some other time.]

entertainment was Once, a "modern-day musical." the description I ran across when I found this film said it was filmed in 17 days on the streets of Dublin for something like $150K. I figured we really had to watch it.

accents are great, except when they're not. like when there's an argument in the beginning of the film between the main character and a would-be thief.

D: I can't understand anything the other guy is saying.
R: I dunno. just a lot of fuck. Ireland is full of fuck. so is Brazil.
D: but not India.
R: you're right!
D: India is full of fish.
R: what the fish?!

anyway, the food and movie were all great. the movie did not have a Hollywood ending. sweet, and romantic, and fun. and full of Irish accents.
