Cast of Characters
Though this is where possible built on a range of shared dub voice actors, Japanese names are used for the Savers cast to follow Haruhi's utter lack of name changing. Dub (Data Squad) names, where applicable, are given in brackets.
As well as roles and allegiances, this fic plays with ages to make up for the lack of teenage characters in Savers. The differences between characters' canon ages and their ages here are also given in brackets.
Kyon: Touma (Thomas) H. Norstein (canon age: 14; fic age: 16)
The two share a dub voice actor, Crispin Freeman. However, it is not merely a name that connects them: Compare Thomas and Kyon. Crispin Freeman uses what sounds like the same pitch and range for the two characters; the only difference is their tone. Thomas puts on more airs; Kyon is more resigned.
This is what sparked this entire spoof.
In character, meanwhile, the main similarities are that both boys are smarter than they let on, and they also both have a little sister.
Haruhi Suzumiya: Masaru Daimon (canon age: 14; fic age: 16)
Crack and some faint similarities in personality: Both are loud, hot-headed embodiments of chaos.
Yuki Nagato: Megumi Shirokawa (canon age: never given, possibly early 20s; fic age: 16)
Megumi actually shares a dub voice actress with Mikuru (Stephanie Sheh), and would probably make for better fan service, given one of the animation teams on Savers. However, she was moved to Yuki's role because of her connection to Miki, her fellow bridge bunny in Savers but cast here as Kimidori to retain a loose connection between the two characters.
Megumi's netbook is an Asus Eee PC 701.
Mikuru Asahina: Yoshino Fujieda (canon age: 18; fic age: 17)
With the shared voice actor removed, Yoshino was put into Mikuru's role to exploit the canon age difference between her and the boys. (However, like many characters from Savers, Yoshino is aged down. The series simply does not have as many teenage characters as other Digimon series.) Though Yoshino tends to be presented as fairly capable, her self doubt and insecurity almost matches Mikuru's feelings of uselessness when compared to Yuki and Itsuki.
Ryoko Asakura: Nanami (canon age: never given, possibly mid-teens to early 20s; fic age: 16)
This was one of my first recasting decisions, based on the rivalry and murder attempts between Touma and Nanami in Savers. Nanami's twisted nature fit Asakura quite nicely.
Ohashi and Ono are both fanon family names, courtesy of razorsaw and infinityblade. Ohashi is an alias; Ono is her real name (as real as one gets being an alien, at any rate).
Taniguchi: Tsukasa Kagura (canon age: never given, older than Touma; fic age: 16)
Taniguchi and Kunikida's roles have been reversed: Kagura, a video game-only character, attended the same university as Touma (it was Kunikida who went to junior high with Kyon). However, Kagura will still provide commentary on the class's social interactions.
Voice actor-based casting was actually possible for Taniguchi: Unfortunately Sam Reigel plays Taniguchi and Kudamon, which would have made no sense with the role of Digimon in this fic.)
Kunikida: Ikuto Noguchi (Keenan Crier) (canon age: 10; fic age: 12)
They share a voice actress, Brianne Siddall. To keep in with the role reversal of Taniguchi and Kunikida, Ikuto's almost brotherhood with Masaru in Savers serves as his connection to the crazy here, translating into a kind of hero worship from afar. (Unfortunately, for exposition's sake, he's started to sound like a stalker.)
Okabe-sensei: Akihiro Kurata
Let it be known that Digimon Savers has far too small a cast. My other options were Director Hashima (the role didn't seem appropriate), Rentarou Satsuma (worked better as part of the Organization), and Tsubasa Hayase (I'd rather put him anywhere but teaching). At least this would make classes entertaining.
