Small things that I'm thankful for in good ol' England
Pretty bedsheets and duvet covers. They make the room look like it's yours.
Valence sheets. Instead of just being tucked under your mattress, this sheet goes all the way to the floor. Not only does it hide all the stuff under your bed (suitcase, empty boxes etc), it also makes your bed look luxurious.
A good pillow. My neck ached like the dickens after sleeping on the university-provided pillow, so I went out and bought a core-support pillow and slept like a baby thereafter.
Beautiful plates and bowls. Not only do they make your meals happier, they're distinctive and so your kitchen mates can't accidentally borrow your plate. Thankfully that hasn't happened in my kitchen, but it has happened to a friend.
Micro-fibre dish cloths. They absorb fast, and dry fast. And you want to dry your dishes fast so you can put them back into your cupboard and don't leave them out in a kitchen of 7 people which nonetheless only has one drying rack.
Non-stick, stainless steel pots with covers that have holes at the side so you can drain pasta and vegetables easily.
Sharp kitchen knives.
Spices. Particularly mixed herbs, and paprika.
The Common Agricultural Policy which gives me lovely fresh produce and cheese at cheap prices.
The impact that pretty pictures and a flower can have on your room.
Having a huge desk that's placed in front of an even larger window. Sunlight is getting limited, but I get a good amount of it right in front of me everyday.
A wonderfully soft, patterned fleece throw.
A water filter, kettle and a small stash of tea in your room.
The foldable copy holder, which elevates your papers and textbooks so that you don't kill your neck.
A hipster laundry basket, the kind that you can rest on your hip so that you have one hand free to do things like open the doors on the way to the launderette (and there are a lot of doors in my residence).
Proximity to Sainsburys.
