When we got back on Sunday evening I found the fruit bowl full of water, and it quickly became clear that this was due to a leak from the boiler, as the kitchen wall was soaking wet too and the wood work was peeling. Joy. Simon rang the plumber, and carefully organised for him to come over in the morning, despite my saying I'd be in all afternoon. Alex threw up all over his bedding at 2:00, so I had to sort that out, sort him out, put on wash and try and settle him again. I didn't get back to sleep. He was fine in the morning.
We had a trip out to Liz's on Monday morning for the NCT get together, it was a fairly good turn out, 5 of us plus kids. Simon waited in for the plumber!
In the afternoon Hannah and Oscar came over to drop of her push chair and say hello. The boys weren't nearly as bad together as last time, so that is an improvement. Hannah's push chair is a lot more ragged then mine, so I think I'll freecycle it.
Alex didn't throw up on Monday night, but he coughed up a bit of banana on Tuesday morning, on our bedding. More washing! He also didn't settle 'til 12:00, and woke up at 5:30.
On Tuesday we went shopping. Alex was brilliant, couting the fruit, holding bags, and helping me choose a nice trout for our tea. Then we went over to Caths in lieu of Earwigs. Liz turned up too, and the kids were all messing about on the trampoline. Alex was fine all day, but when I put him to bed he threw up again, more washing! He didn't settle well after that and kept us both awake a lot, poor thing.
On Wednesday I tried to persuade Alex to go back to sleep in my bed, and he nearly did twice, but he bravely fought it! Mum came over at 11, and I went off to the Folk Hall to help set up the NELLI hands on hobby and craft fair. It was a really good day, and if all the people who dropped out in the week leading up to it had actually turned up we would have run out of space! We filled up steadily from 2, oddly we had mainly kids turn up, but they had a good time, and tried all the activities, even the ones like lace making, calligraphy and beekeeping that would seem an unlikely choice for hoards of 8-12 year old. All the stall holders had carefully thought about what they were presenting and they all seemed to think it was worthwhile when we spoke to them. The last event we did was a bit of a damp squib, where we presented our results alongside local groups, and not many people turned up, but this event was thronged, even if it wasn’t with the people we expected to show up. We got enough that many of the clubs now have new members, and the Hobby Craft stall was always full. The elephant balloons went down well too, the small kids loved them and the larger kids were amused by the accidentally phallic trunks that didn’t really inflate!
Mum came over with Alex, and she managed to have a good luck round and maek some useful contacts for Beck Isle museum’s craft days. Alex had a go at making badges and planting seeds and seemed to enjoy himself, they stayed for a couple of hours, far longer than I expected them too.
I left at 17:30 and was definitely glad to get a call from Susan telling me not to go back as I wasn’t needed. I’ve had 15 hours sleep in the past 3 days and I am running on empty, but this fair has been a big boost to my flagging spirits. Some of the kids were a bit cheeky and working the free drinks system, so I am damn glad NELLI was not picking up the bill, but it was a really good day. I even got to play with some of the crafts and learnt that I can get a key to the nature reserve. Being able to go in there, lock myself in and zone out will really help me keep my head together.
Alex actually slept all night, until 7:40. As I'd had plenty of sleep, and the bed to myself, I decided to bite the bullet and go with Cath to Playdale Farm over by Scarborough. It was an hours drive, but it was worth it. Alex got a bit grumpy in the middle as he was tired, hungry and cold, but we managed to sort out 2 of the problems, and he rallied. The kids enjoyed feeding the animals and playing on all the equipment, and I had quite a good day. I've never seen a Shetland Mule before. There was a little electric tractor that cost £1 for a good long ride, but Alex didn't get having to press the clutch down, so I had to follow him round holding it down and trying not to get run over! Most of the kids fell asleep in the car on the way home, and I am hopeful of a full nights sleep tonight. Simon is back, and Alex was pleased to see him, but I would have liked the bed to myself again!
