Bugger

Mum came over and we took Alex into town, and it was a total disaster. We took him to have a fun day and prove that York does not always involve boring shopping, but he wasn't at all interesting in the Vikings, preferring Top Shop's escalator instead, so we took him over to the NRM. After 10 minutes queuing we got in, and had to queue for the toilets, then Alex was not amused when he couldn't climb on the small engine in the foyer. We had to hide the push chair under the luggage lockers as all the ones big enough to take it were full and Alex needed 2 people chasing him! We then headed to the great hall so he could look at the engines, but he wanted to play on them too. He didn't like the Chinese engine as you can go on the foot plate but its all barriers, and all the others you could just look in. After 15 minutes we left. Alex hated it and found it really frustrating. I guess its a bit like taking a child that loves playing with animals to the natural history museum. Maybe we've spoilt him with too many foot plate experiences, but if you can't throw coal throw in the fire box and get chocolate hob nobs off the crews he just isn't interested in engines. It will be many years until we take him back there, as we have to be able to explain these are stuffed and mounted engines not live things he can play with. Today was meant to teach Alex that getting the bus into York could be fun, rather then just boring shopping. It totally backfired. He is now upstairs sleeping off the tantrums, lunch and an hour spent jumping on the bed with granny.

bum, day trips, alex
