Last week I visited my parents in Asheville (actually north of Asheville) for the first time. It's so NICE up there! I never want to go home when I go to the mountains. We had a very low-key Christmas. Basically no one has any money for presents, and it's kind of nice that no one has any money all at once because it takes the pressure of everyone ( Read more... )

Wow, what a fabulous visit! Beautiful scenery, happy times with family, great food (!!), and people to talk books with on the plane. You can't beat that!

I seriously need to go back to Asheville again some day. Now that I don't live in TN anymore I feel like I should've gone up there to visit more often. (I'm saving money so maybe I can go to Moogfest next year). The area is beautiful and I really like the vibe there, it's similar to Austin except minus all the Libertarians

That discount grocery store sounds like a great idea, too

The night before, I made khichidi (a porridge of split moong beans and basmati rice) and Gujarati-style spinach--and it actually turned out right! *happy* For me, that's a hug on a plate, because it's nice, warm, mushy, comforting, and yummy, and I grew up eating it. My mom would put a dollop of butter in the middle of the pile of khichidi. . .
