Happy December!

December had come in with a coldfront, which is just how I like it. I need to dig out my advent calendars. But today I'm just enjoying the fact that I am Done With Things. For the last two months solid I have been working on something or away from home every single day. But now I am done! I can turn my attentions to the Grim Reaper book, which I'm ( Read more... )

Cool! Yeah, my dad has mentioned getting a ukulele of his own to mess around with, having seen how fun mine is... (My dad is the musician of the family.)

I want to say I've read a book like that--maybe What the World Eats (?). It showed the family and all the food they'd buy in a week, all at once. Fascinating, both from a food perspective and from an anthropological one.

I'm like you on reading more YA. Yet I'm almost 40k into a MG, which surprises me. I like it and it's flowing. But I wonder if I'm doing it right?? I guess I just have to wait until my 10YO reads it. He tends to be excoriating when things aren't working, so I'm sure I'll hear about it...

Hungry Planet maybe? Or there was one for kids they did that was similar. I'm crazy for that sort of thing...can't wait to see what they do next.

I'm having the same problem! Am I doing it right? Can I do this? Does this sound too YA? But I'm also having a ton of fun with it, so I'm trying to just let the story take over, and I guess my agent can tell me if it's not MG enough. I'm not sure my crit partners will know either...

No...I never listen to the radio or podcasts or anything like that, as I am a terrible auditorial learner! Funny, I wasn't like that as a kid, but now I am.

The mathiness of music actually comforts me a bit, learning about it, because I love music but I don't really understand it and I'm glad to learn there is some logic to it. I'm good at logic! As long as music isn't like algebra. I'd have trouble with that. =D

Yes, it is! I had a lot of trouble with math when I was a kid. Neither I nor my teachers--not even my piano teacher--recognized that a kid who could play piano so well should be able to do math too.

Enjoy your ukulele and your new writing project.

Math is kind of...mistaught and misunderstood in this country, isn't it? I always thought I was terible at math as a kid. But as an adult I came to understand that I'm just bad at textbook math...math that has no application in my life. When I was a kid I loved statistics! I used to spend hours making lists of all my characters and calculating various statistics for them and making charts. I rocked the statistics part of the SATs. And when I worked in retail I was great with quick and dirty percentages for discounts. But algebra...no way. Just no way. I also think if I would have understood the historical importance and context of math I would have been more interested.

Oh, advent calendars! (I haven't even put up the Christmas tree yet...I'm horribly behind this year.)
