I know I'm not the only one who ends up with this dilemma. You start blogging back in the Bronze Age (by internet standards), you make a bunch of friends in the trenches where you talk about writing woes and your personal life, and everything's great...but suddenly...
You sell a book and then it comes OUT. Strangers are Googling you every day. Fans are emailing you (at least, once in awhile). Blogging becomes...well, bizarre. Because the bulk of your friends are still your old friends to whom you talked about stuff like salad recipes and health woes. Are your fans interested in that? Well, some of them will be, but the blog just begins to feel...weird.
Then, there are my Arestin stories. Whatever books I write professionally, my first love will always be my stories about the world of Arestin; more than I could tell in a lifetime, and I've been depressed lately because I don't know if those novels will sell, and if they do, I still can't tell some of the stories I love because they're about adults, or they're too slice-of-life, or they're shorter than a novel. I want a spot for those right NOW, so I don't feel stifled by my inability to tell them. Frankly, for that deep-seated soul need to share, five readers isn't much different from five thousand readers. And what about when I'm done with the stories of Erris and Nimira or Alan and Esmerine? I might like to see what happened to Annalie or Karstor once in awhile too. I don't know. I want a place for those if I'm so inclined so I don't feel as trapped by "The End"s or "Unfortunately, I'll have the pass on this manuscript"s.
So, I've decided to start a short story and story "extras" blog. That blog will contain:
--short stories about Arestin (largely self-contained, but linked)
--eventually, short stories that expand the stories in my novels (I have to see what will be in the published novels before I can do this!)
--character art
--story musings, Q&A (if I get to the point where people ask me questions), etc
Important news like book sales will go both places, most likely. This blog will still be here for salad recipes and woes and stuff of that nature.
Plus, Blogspot is the hot thing now, so, okay, I'll give it a whirl.
