Oh my gosh! The horror! I love those old recipes too--to look at, not to actually make. The one I will always remember was a recipe I found for chopped up hot dog circles floating in aspic. I'm gagging just thinking about it--and giggling.

Ack! I mean, you might as well eat the hot dogs in aspic while playing that Peter Pretentious game you found. For a right jolly evening.

Too funny! And I'm quite sure my mother and my mother-in-law both have some of those cookbooks still around...

Not food, but I love this blog entry about a 1970's JC Penney catalog this guy found in an attic. http://15minutelunch.blogspot.com/2007/10/strap-in-shut-up-and-hold-on-were-going.html

Ack! Memories of Home Dreck are coming back... More like nightmares.

You haven't lived until you've made White Sauce. I don't remember what was in it, but it looked and tasted exactly like paste.

The funny thing is, this topic came up during Christmas for conversation, completely unrelated to this blog entry... we were talking about all the bad sauces and uses for mayonnaise and Jell-O... on the other hand, a lot of people don't even try to cook nowadays, which isn't necessarily much better...

on the other hand, if everything at Christmas was white sauce and shrimp slop, maybe people would be less likely to put on holiday pounds... (okay, not a good enough bright side.)

Ok, I'm convinced I need to find some of these old magazines. Although, I can't cook now, so I'm pretty sure I would be terrible at these.
