More health nut foodie adventures

A couple of months ago, I stayed with my parents for a few days to visit. My mom has been increasingly moving toward a raw diet. At the time I visited, my parents were both eating almost totally raw food, and I wondered if I would go crazy in three days ( Read more... )

I've found that a salad keeps me full if I put enough fat and protein in it. Avocados, nuts, seeds, cheese... Denser veggies seem to help too, beets or carrots. Well, and make sure it's a big enough salad. I've gotten used to eating my lunch out of the biggest bowl I own. Sometimes I do still need some fruit for a snack before I make my dinner... Also, if you're kind of active during the day you might need more food...I'm totally...not, except for a little bit of exercise...

I got an 8-dollar copy of that Savannah cookbook we were looking at in . . . Savannah, and it has my new favorite fruit salad of all time--chunks of watermelon with olive oil and champagne vinegar, shaved red onion, black pepper and feta, and some mint to garnish.

Also, pear and baby spinach with pear-infused vinegar is an old stand-by (so apparently I just really like fruit in my salad).

Ooooh, that sounds excellent. I've been wanting to make more salad with watermelon, but all summer we ate it before it could turn into anything but itself...

My MIL is a raw foodie...she's made some interesting things for us, but my favorite is probably her raw sushi ;)

I totally had one of those salads you posted about a year ago, too. automatonne October 13 2009, 04:18:35 UTC
Cool! I think your salad making is pretty darn creative and I've loved the ones that I tried from recipes you sent me (beet and apple salad, holla!!)...(yeah, I just holla-ed a beet salad).

But then I am a HUGE Caesar salad fan, which is the granddaddy of unhip awful salads, but I can never, ever get enough of those. I could live on Caesar salads for weeks.

However, now that it is cold here, I'm often not interested in salads.

(And right now I have a large caffeinated national-coffee-chain coffee and a donut at my elbow at 12:15 AM).

Oh, I LOVE a good Caesar myself. How can you NOT? I enjoy unhip classic things sometimes. Just not encased in Jell-O or mayo. Or maybe anything else that ends in "o".

M and I are trying to lose weight. We usually have a large salad for lunch. I always include a low-fat protein. And we're drinking lots more water.

Sounds like a good plan! I lost a little weight doing this too. I know, I know, I don't have much to lose anyway, but some of that vintage dress collection is very unforgiving...
