Before I forget, this week in my life

Jan 02, 2009 01:39

On Tuesday eve I got back from visiting my dad's side of the family up in Lake City, FL. We stayed in cabins not far from the banks of the Suwannee River (which I may or may not be able to spell?) and nearly everyone was there. Twenty-one people, if my counting is correct! It's lucky those cabins have HUGE porches and it wasn't too cold.

The Good:
--Lovely weather
--I looked awfully adorable on the first day in my 50's striped dress with pockets
--Many good conversations with different family members
--Amusing moments playing Apples to Apples, like my young cousin deliberating whether Going to School or Adolf Hitler embodied "wicked".
--Excellent food, mostly healthy. My mom can turn lacinato kale into the most delicious thing under the sun.
--Stopping in a Lake City antique store and scoring, for $29, some vintage enameled cast iron Descoware (think Le Creuset) cookware: 5-qt Dutch oven, 9" skillet, two small pots with lids, all in good shape...SUPER STEAL...also the old guy at the antique shop was a sweetie
--You can actually buy kombucha in downtown Lake City!

The Bad:
--Evil EXIT sign casting bright red evil light onto the room at night where my sister and I were trying to sleep.
--Also, sister can't sleep with keyboard typing, hence very little writing done
--Other, littlest sister had a cold the whole time; I felt bad for her
--Kinda scary religious lady working in the park gift shop talking very loudly. North Florida is all Bible Belt-y in a way that makes me appreciate Orlando a bit more...
--Chik-fil-a taunted me, first by my forgetting it was Sunday, then on the way back, it turned out it was actually just plain closed anyway
--Two hour traffic jam on the Turnpike with people getting out of their cars on the way home...*groan*

Bonus Good:
--In the traffic jam, the people getting out of their cars in front of us were the most ADORABLE old people, like an old man in a cap and brown cardigan twiddling a stress ball between his fingers, and they all took a photo of themselves waving at traffic going the other direction.

I am settled back home now, writing, la la. Went to Grandma and Grandpas tonight for some new year's day leisure, also beans and herring salad for good luck in the new year! (Among other foods, mostly involving tasty pork products.)

random, holidays
