for those of you who know me  IRL you know that even though this icon is seriously outdated, my hair hasn't changed much.
it has been a sort of medium brown to coppery brown, long more or less straight mass of hair, that i do NOT  "style" or layer or die or do anything besides braid, put in pony tails, or pin up with my Mei Fa Hairstyx (or the ( Read more... )

I am *so* glad you didn't choose Locks of Love. They have rather questionable practices, including the fact that they have made less than ten wigs a year, despite all the donations - most of which they sell - (and none of them go to kids with cancer - not that kids with alopecia don't need wigs, but I find it rather disingenuous of them to not make this clear.)

i picked Wigs for Kids because they do wigs for more than just kids with alopecia.. and they had a list of participating stylists.

i knew Locks of love mostly did alopecia, i wasnt aware it was ONLY alopecia.

only ten? woah.. wigs for kids does over 30 some years. the back log is the man hours needed to make wigs...

and wigs for kids sells any *unusable* hair. which is cool by me, but not any *usable* hair.

tsk. glad i picked the one i did....

I donated my hair two years ago. It's a good feeling. And you'll get used to the lack of hair.

I got a headache my head was so much lighter.

i have a bit of one today.

and i know it will grow back, and even be in better condition and all.... but i am still at the "this is just wrong!" phase (smile)

i dont think i could deal with it if it hadnt been for a good cause.

When I got mine cut, it went from past my derriere to shoulder-length. It took a while for me to adjust as well, and I had a similar problem with control and hang. I donated mine as well, so I don't regret it. I just wish I had some idea of what it would be like afterwards. I'm currently growing it out again, and it's down to the middle of my back again. The next time I donate, I will take your advice and contact Wigs for Kids instead.

basically? look around.. there are lots of places that will take your donation, you may as well pick one you like and think will do a good job.

mine, this time, was edging past my derrière, but the longest parts of it were pretty beat up, which is why i had them cut it a bit extra... they didnt think the wig folks could use the full length of the longest part, too damaged, but they were sure they got a good 12 inches of "usable" hair.

and its just plain weird feeling. too light, too short, etc etc etc...
i know i will adjust, just right now it feels so odd.

I was right...you are a wonderful lady :)
Thank you thank you thank you for donating to Wigs for Kids :)
You may hate it now, but you've done something not many people can do in the world full of permed/dyed/colored haired people: given a gift

I had a moment like yours some years back. I used to bleach my hair blonde (dont ask me why...people saw it and took 50 points off my IQ and it was so damaging...)

One day I left my moms with bleached Debbie Harry blonde hair that I could sit on...
And came home with collar length hair dyed to match my eyebrows and roots

My mom took one look, gasped like a fish out of water and said '"Put it back!! Now!" **laughs gently**

since mine is "virgin hair" (not dyed, permed or treated) i was a good candidate. very few places can take the treated hair. i keep telling myself "it was a good cause".

"put it back" thats a good one...
i stared at the fake fair extensions in the cosmetic store a good long while, i tell you that!

and i had a blond wig for a while, i wore it for costumes. and yeah. people take 50 points off your IQ, which is weird, because the natural blonds i know are pretty smart.

Great cause! littleblueghost November 29 2007, 11:08:54 UTC
It is so weird getting used to new hair. All I can really say is, it will grow.

I shaved my hair off to raise money for cancer (people sponsored you to do so), so I understand completely. It doesn't have the same weight, and it is like relearning what it will and won't do.

Anyway, when you met me, that was 15 months of going from completely bald, to the length it was with a few trims and cuts between whiles. So hair does grow back quite quickly (even though it may feel like ages...)

And it is a brilliant cause you have donated to!

15 months? wow your hair grows FAST... i never would have known.

i am not bald, the salon lady said it wasn't even 'short", but you know how it is... to ME its short.

15 months.... deep breath....

Short varies for different people... I get bored with growing hair, so often it gets chopped before it gets truly long!

I'll tell you what, though, it was cold. I have lots of hair. It is natural insulation and they decided for the day that it should be a month before winter. So freezing... Never worn so many beanies in my life, and I can now completely understand why people that lose their hair do that!

I am sure you may find the same thing for your shoulders and back...
