WW uses a point system where your daily allotted points are calculated by using your weight, age, sex and general activity level. As you lose weight, your allotted points decrease (about 1 point every 10 pounds), because your energy needs decrease.

No food is "forbidden." A lot of people will do it using artifical sweeteners, but there are also many who do not. I would avoid the WW processed foods because those generally do have artificial sweeteners in them.

There is also a stress on consuming "filling foods." These are generally fruits and vegetables, higher in fiber, and stick with you. It also includes some very lean proteins.

The meetings are useful because you get to share experiences and hear about ideas from other people.

Eventually, after a couple of weeks of meetings, you'll start hearing about adding more and different exercise to your routine. It's never easy to change a routine at all, but again, folks will have ideas. When there was nice weather, my WW compatriots would arrive 20 minutes early to walk until we weighed in.

It's a reasonable tool. It requires that you record your food intake (you'll get trackers - either a weekly tracker, a 3 month tracker, or you can use the online tracker).

Nobody will chastise you if you gain weight in a particular week. They may ask you if you know why it happened. There is a group of people to share your set-backs and your successes, too. Some of it strikes me as silly, but there's also a feeling of camaraderie. Everyone there is trying to do the same thing.

Yes, this - the recipe builder is my life-saver. I can adjust my recipes to my needs, and still figure out the points value.

There are all sorts of points calculators in the online tools. There's the calculator for food, the calculator to determine your allottment of points, and the calculator for your activity (you can offset some points with activity).

It's incredibly useful.

It is very easy to figure out points on home cooked meals. You just add up the points on the ingredients for whatever you happen to use. WW is perfect for when you have food allergies because there is no forbidden foods and no foods that you have to eat. You do what you can. I may even have an extra set of first week stuff if you want to try it on your own. Kat and I both joined and stayed for a few weeks this fall, until money became too big a concern for both of us to stay doing it.

for the record, yes the online system does - you can type in your recipe and it calculates your points.
