Food allergies rant, oh.. yes and museum trip

Apr 27, 2010 16:08

i am using my "no aspartame" icon because i dont have a generic food allergy icon.

so anyway, after my early class i had a choice, try to get to the Penn Museum and do a homework assignment (i actually suspect it is my midterm exam) or do nothing useful until 130 and then go to the fashion "club" where a alum who was also on project runway was going to speak.

decisions.. decision...
i figured i would try to do both.
so i went to the Pensylvania University Museum

took the bus up, and then walked.. you know blocks get longer as you age? anyway, went in and realized that with no breakfast and it now being near lunch, i was not in good shape, but luckily they have a cafe!
so i finally wander through and find the cafe.. and look at the menu.....
uh oh not a lot of options i can eat.... and some of them raise questions about whether i can eat it, i need to ask. so i wait until the one other customer leaves and go back over.
after getting the service person to take her dmn ipod earphone out, i say
" i have food allergies, so i need to know exactly what is in some things.."
she stares at me like i am speaking Urdu....
i repeat 'i have food allergies" and ask her an ingredient question about what is in something (the grilled cheese and spinach panini, since it was the only thing that looked safe)...
she stares at me again and then shrugs. i say "i have allergies and i need to know"
she then steps into the kitchen and says "some lady wants ta know whats in the Cheese and spinach panini"
the kitchen lady then says something like "cheese and spinach"
i repeat "i have allergies, is there ANYTHING else in it?"
she stares at me and shakes her head and puts her dmn ear bud back in.

i give up (hypoglycemia will do that to you) and order it.. this requires me to get her to take the dmn ear bug out again.
i then have to stop her from putting it back in and ask her whats in the side salad that it comes with.
she stares at me
"is it JUST lettuce?" i say looking at a big bin of what appears to be romaine.
she steps into the kitchen and asks the same lady "she wants ta know whats in the SALAD!"
the lady comes out and glares at us both and says "LETTUCE!" and i say "i have allergies, there is NOTHING else in it? no onion, nothing?" she says just lettuce, ya want tomato "no thank you"

so my panini is finally ready, and the lady asks me what dressing i want, and NOT feeling up to another go round of "please take out your dmn ear bud again and answer my question" i say "no, allergic" and go to sit down

and find out they lied
the "lettuce mix" has radicchio (ok, i guess thats lettuce, but it sure isnt romaine) and TOMATOES..... cut tomatoes.
i bite into the sandwich
big ole slice of tomato.. grilled right into it... and there is SOME kind of seasoning on the bread.

now lucky for me, i am not allergic to tomato. i know people who are.
i took an anti histamine to be on the safe side about the seasoning....

but honestly.. anyone in food service, especially when they deal with tour groups and kids..... when someone waits for you to not be busy, and starts every dmn question with "i have food allergies" you would THINK they might consider what they are telling you..... or at least take the dmn earbud out.

yes i filed a complaint.

anyway i wandered around, got my homework done, managed to "swim upstream " against the crowds of school kids....
got a couple post cards, which i plan to scan and add to my report, and possibly use for other stuff... drooled at some books, and then left to walk home

(short form, no harm done, but idiots in the cafeteria/cafe could have killed someone, also the museum is still great after all these years, but apparently has shrunk since i was a kid lol)

anyway i was walking back to the transit when i suddenly realized i was RIGHT near Drexel's admission and etc office.

now when i had tried to get my transcript from them, they had said i owed them money. (no , i dont, and dont you think SOMEONE would have sent me a bill sometime this past 15 years?)
their web page is no help
so this time i went in and actually found someone willing to talk to me in person. yup, records say i owed them 40 bucks.. no record of WHY.. at all... so they had to close it, which meant i then went upstairs and to the registrars office, and back down to the ATM, and back up to the registrars office and should get my transcript (all one class and a few credits of tests) in 5 days or so.

and then home
so i got a lot of walking, and now i have to go off to work.

money, class, allergies and anaphylaxis, school, u of pa, drexel, idiots, penn museum
