If you are a guy, buying a gift for a woman, this may be of some help... good luck!
If you are a guy then there are a few differences in buying for women that you need to be aware of.

'The real sacrifice, the real "i love you" is to say "I will go with you to the store and point out the one that I think looks good, and wait while you try it on." This is as opposed to saying "I'll be over in the DVD shop, let me know when you're done."'
By the way, I spoke all of these out loud to my husband... I apparently have a weirdo, he was spot on almost every answer (except when it came to colors, he said red instead of burgundy, and blue instead of navy... I'm presuming it's a guy thing where every color in the reddish spectrum is red and every color in the bluish spectrum is blue).
My own little addendum is that despite knowing every answer, he still manages to get me something I really don't want most of the time. *smirk* Like the DVD's for the original cartoon Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. My husband is a geek, and despite the fact that he is aware that the female gender doesn't always go geek, he tends to forget that point when he's in a DVD shop looking for presents for everyone else in the family. *smirk* He knows I'm a geek. However, presents are meant to be "not geek" in my opinion. ;)
I will say that at least this year, I know I'm getting one present that isn't designed for him to enjoy... I spotted him stopping by the carved candle booth at the NY renfaire this year, and he kept hiding this package... ;) He's not a candle person. For once, he got me something just for me. *grin* Only took me seven years to drill that one into his head, he's learning... ;)
