I’d like to tell you a tale. A tale of this land that is well known, a tale of Albion. Interpret it as you will, but what I tell you is not that of lies.
Our story begins thousands, maybe even millions, of years ago. A time when Heroes were rare but chaos was not. There is an area outside the land of Albion, an area known only as the Void. Very little is known about the Void other than schoolyard tales and bard songs. Some say that it is another plane of existence completely. Others say that it is a fate worse than death. But neither bard nor child nor scholar can confirm what is true.
What is world renown about the Void, however, is that an entity lives there. One of great power, power of such a magnitude that if it were to be unleashed upon Albion… Well, there is not much hope for the people. He goes by the name Jack of Blades and he does not reign alone.
There with him is also the Queen of Blades and the Knight of Blades. Together they are known as the Court, an evil order said to have existed before man even began. This Court of evil beings, this Shadow Court so to speak, descended upon Albion hoping to force the people to bow down to them. The people, being of sound mind, refused. This of course only angered the three and they burned Albion until the earth turned black and the sky was thick with smoke.
Believing that the citizens of Albion had learned, the Court again asked the people to bow down and again, Albion resisted. The Court was prepared and this time, they lifted the sea into the sky and flooded the world. Though Albion was a tough and resilient land, they were uncertain of how much more they could take.
The third time that the Court demanded worship, they brought false promises of peace. Albion was not so easily fooled and for what seemed to be the third and final time, they resisted. The Court was not pleased. They twisted and warped the minds of the poor creatures of Albion until they could not think for themselves. They were deemed insane and finally, the Court, the legion of three, got the worship they so sought out.
While the Court so steadied their reign of terror, a humble blacksmith and his wife had a child, a baby boy by the name of William Black. And whilst they did not know it, he would go on to become the key to saving Albion.
Little is known about William’s childhood. As a grown man he dazzled others with the powers of his mind, by which he was able to protect his village and perform feats no other men could equal. These acts became known as the “Powers of Will.”
William grew fixated with the Court, resolute to find a way to overthrow it. While reading out of a mysterious tome, he was suddenly thrust into the Void. It was here that he stumbled upon Jack of Blades, who sat on a throne surrounded by appalling figures. Jack tried to bind William with the power of an ornate sword, but our hero fought back and managed to steal the sword before escaping the netherworld.
Once returned to Albion, the sword spoke to William. It called itself the Sword of Aeons and it promised to help him defeat the Court, but only if William offered his soul in return. With the Sword of Aeons, William set off to find the Court.
William set off for Mount Ruon, the highest mountain in all of Albion, and confronted the Court. The Knight of Blades challenged William first and, wielding the Sword of Aeons, William destroyed him completely. Jack of Blades did threaten William’s life next. They boldly fought, a battle royale for the ages, but William emerged triumphant, destroying Jack’s body. Unbeknownst to William, however, Jack of Blades was not slain and what was left of his soul took refuge in his mask.
The Queen of Blades was the last to face William. For weeks, their battle raged across Albion. It is said that mountains and valleys formed from their deadly blows. At last, William did slay the Queen and free the people from their oppression. They commended William, who took the title of Archon, as their king.
Once he had defeated the Court, the Archon set his mind to unite Albion into a majestic kingdom. His powers of Will were so great that it seemed the world morphed itself to accommodate his wishes. Cities were built in a week’s time and marvelous machines were constructed that ran on Will alone. Through a thousand years of peace, Albion reigned as the greatest center of business and thinking the world had ever known.
But without an enemy to vanquish, the Archons grew petty and cruel. They claimed the title of Heroes and used their powers of Will to terrorize the people. A younger Archon might have stopped them, but his battle with the Queen and his time spent in the Void had tainted his body and mind with a grave illness. Faced with this rot, William wrapped his body in golden post and a royal blue cloak before his disappearance. He dawned the identity of ‘Scythe’ and went on to form the Heroes Guild with a reformed bandit known as Nostro.
And as William left, thus began the corruption of The Kingdom.
