According to Dagoberto Gilb, the characteristic that Steinbeck obtains which makes him such an outstanding literary artist is that he wrote stories about work. Steinbeck drew his pictures with words of hard-working people who were filled with innocence but faced with evil. Whether it was low wages or abuse, he wrote about lower class citizens whose main objectives were to survive. His sympathy and compassion for the oppressed or just the less fortunate has changed people lives. Instead of dreaming about fantasies and hoping to reach unmanageable goals, Steinbeck showed people a reason to respect the hard workers of society who go unrecognized. He has demonstrated the need for appreciation of those whose jobs are manual labor. Steinbeck’s magnificent descriptions portray and intertwine nature and the hard workers.
